Cayman coming between the Carrera and the Boxster

Stuttgart. In the course of this year Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, will be enlarging its range of sports cars through the introduction of another outstanding model. Based on the Boxster series, the new car, given its superior product qualities, will rank between the 911 Carrera and the Boxster S. This position of the new model is also borne out by its six-cylinder boxer engine transmitting maximum output of 295 bhp (217 kW) to the rear wheels. Like the power of the engine, the price of this new sports car will also come between that of the 911 Carrera and the Boxster S.

Apart from inner strengths and qualities typical of Porsche, this sporting two-seater will also show outstanding style and superiority in its looks and appearance. The exceptional design of the car is accentuated by muscular design features conveying a strong feeling of both power and agile driving behaviour. In addition, the new sports car not only fulfils the great demands made by the Porsche customer in terms of sporting performance, but also, through its well-conceived space concept, allows all kinds of leisure time activities.

Reflecting its superior and, indeed, unique product substance, this new Porsche sports car will bear its own name: It will be called the Cayman S, thus ranking equal with the Carrera, Boxster, and Cayenne model designations already so rich in tradition.

Introducing this name, Porsche is taking up a concept from the animal world: The cayman belongs to the crocodile family. Within this group of the world's largest reptiles, the cayman is however a relatively small but very nimble athlete. And precisely this creates a clear resemblance not only to Porsche's new sports car, but also to the Company as a whole: The cayman is acknowledged as a highly specialised hunter with strength and agility, quick reflexes and clear target orientation.

The heart of the Cayman S is its 3.4-litre power unit mounted midship in front of the rear axle. Benefiting from this mid-engine concept and an excellent power-to-weight ratio, the Cayman S is perfectly suited for the kind of performance so typical of Porsche: The Cayman S responds directly to the steering and ensures very dynamic behaviour in bends. It goes without saying that Porsche, maintaining the usual standard, offers supreme brake technology for very high deceleration forces also in this new, fixed roof model. In a nutshell, therefore, the combination of supreme power and performance in the Cayman S provides an unprecedented experience on the road: driving pleasure in its purest form.

Cayman, hmmm. The car is either named after a member of the crocodile family, or a Caribbean island that is a favorite place for wealthy people to have off-shore bank accounts.

The Boxster is already way overpriced in my opinion, but I think the Cayman will be a very popular alternative to the 911. It makes a pretty nice looking hardtop as well. In fact the 911 is becoming more of a GT, and the Cayman S is like what the 911 used to be many years ago.

Stuttgart. Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart will be launching the new Cayman S on November 26, 2005. This sporty two-seater, based on the Boxster series, boasts a newly developed six-cylinder boxer engine with a capacity of 3.4 liters and an output of 295 bhp (217 KW). The assembly delivers an impressive performance: high and constant propulsive power at lower and medium speeds. The sports car’s maximum speed is 275 kilometers per hour. With manual transmission and a centrally placed engine, the Cayman S accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 5.4 seconds.

Equipped with Porsche’s VarioCam Plus system for variable intake camshaft control and valve timing, the Cayman S has a torque of 340 Newtonmeters with between 4,400 and 6,000 rpm. The VarioCam Plus system was previously reserved for the 911 series. Power transmission is executed via a six-speed gearbox with short, precise shifting travel, which was taken from the Boxster S and further developed. The familiar five-speed Tiptronic S automatic transmission is also available on request, and has rocker switches in the steering wheel spokes for a sports gear shifting operation. The Tiptronic S transmission was refined specifically for the sports coupé, receiving a new electronic and hydraulic control unit.

At first sight, the Cayman S looks likes a typical Porsche sports car. At the same time, however, its autonomous design ensures that it stands out against the Boxster and 911 Carrera. The new front is accentuated by oval main headlamps and distinctive air inlets.

The fog lights integrated in the outside air inlets underline Porsche’s current design philosophy. The low-lying upper windshield sill and the pronounced roof profile accentuate the unique and dynamic front view.

The characteristic silhouette of the Cayman S owes itself to the newly designed coupé line with a long wheelbase, a rear end that falls away gently and side windows that perpetuate the dynamic contours of the sill area. The model’s rear view is defined by a large tailgate, powerfully sweeping fenders and an automatically extending wing. The distinctively styled dual exhaust outlet is located centrally below the fenders. The tailgate has a large upward opening width for loading the 260-liter trunk. The trunk, in conjunction with the front luggage compartment (150 liters) and numerous additional storage compartments, ensures that the two-seater also has high practical value.

The aluminum chassis with a large track emphasizes the sporty, dynamic appearance of the vehicle, which is fitted as standard with 18-inch tires. In combination with Porsche Stability Management (PSM), also a standard feature, the chassis sets a benchmark in the area of driving dynamics and active driving safety. Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) can be ordered as a option. This system lowers the body ten millimeters closer to the ground and automatically adjusts the suspension ratings to the given road conditions. The driver can select the Normal or Sport programs via a button in the center console.

The basic price for the Cayman S is 50,300 euros. The vehicle costs 58,529 euros in Germany including value added tax and country-specific requirements.

this is a weird shot of it....makes it look funny

When a basic profile shot makes a car look funny, it's probably just a funny car. The Cayman seems a little redundant. Maybe if it had a flat-4 and cost about 10-15k less than a Boxster it might make more sense.

Porsche seems to be adopting this weird short wheelbase design combined with huge overhangs. The new 911 and Boxster are the same way.

agreed and agreed. i dont like the overhangs i say push the wheels forward and back as far as they can go, especially in the rear of a rear engine car.
