My new E55 AMG - (Radar detector needed)

the valentine one is the best available radar detector, but it isn't discrete.

i'd get the Passport 8500 from escort. it's 95% as good as a V1, but smaller and less abnoxious.

Either that or a bel vector 985, i have the bel vector 940 in my car, and it has been great, but i read passport is better. I've never gotten a ticket with my 940. We have a V1, but it stays in the jaguar. it is just stupidly big, we have it put away most of the time.

try K40. I put that full system in my customized CLK 55 AMG when I bought the car brand new.

It is fully integrated into the car, very discreet and hidden from view. You can select city/highway mode, volume, etc..

It has 360 degree radar and Laser coverage.

Plus, it has a complete radar jammer and a Laser Diffuser, so you can't be caught. They also offer a guarantee that if you get a speeding ticket even a year after you have the system ... they will pay it for you in full.

hope this info helps ....

First off all 360 degree LADAR or RADAR coverage is a gimmick, it's useless to have 360 degree coverage because there is no way they can determine your speed form the side.

The K40 is only laser detection and blocking, it does not detect nor jam radar. There is only one system on the market that can jam radar and that's an active radar jammer (forgot the brand). Those passive jammers are useless and will not work.

If your car is brand blinky shiny new then I'd get a V1 or something similiar which attaches to your window with sucksionnups. A remote mounted system ussualy requires you to drill holes and mess around with wires. Wouldn't want todo that with a new car.

I'd go for the V1 because it gives you good information and it's AI is tweaked to cancel out most fakes. It doesn't have the range most newer detectors have but it makes up with the info it gives.

I respect the opinion of others on this matter, but I must say you should still check out K40 anyway. I've had it for 2 years in one of my cars and never gotten a ticket .. and I speed every day !! I've watched as cops get frustrated because they're pointing their detectors at me, and then my system jams their system, and then they start looking at their detector, tapping it, wondering what happened :-) It makes me laugh every time ... then they look at me very weird as I drive by !!! As far as someone saying maybe their is no such thing as a jammer & diffuser built in to the radar/laser detector .... that might be true because I know I have seperate units that point away from my car ... so therefore K40 might have made the radar/laser detectors seperate from the radar jammers and the laser diffusers. And I've seen their advertisements where they show that they do in fact offer radar jamming and laser jamming (diffusing is what they call it I suppose) ..... usually very upscale cars use K40 ... it's very common to see Porsche Turbos, Ferrari's, etc.. use K40. And that must be for a very good reason. I was a skeptic also and didn't believe it would work ... but now I too believe because it hasn't let me get a speeding ticket yet !!

anyways, hope this helps again

Those are not oppinions. The K40 Laser diffuser is only for laser jamming, not radar jamming. They say so on their own website:

Also compliments your existing radar detector for the ultimate in police radar and laser protection.

K40 has a seperate RADAR detector you can buy the RD850, but that one is not as far sophisticated as the V1 detector. You'd be better off using a V1 with a K40. When it comes to Laser detectors/jammers it doesn't make much difference which one you got. They're all almost the same and range doesn't matter on these devices.

There is just one RADAR jammer on the market that works and that is the Scorpion:

http://www.radarscramblers.com/product_phantom_rcd.htm

And always keep this in mind. So called passive jammers can not work and will not work! Unless it can route warpplasma through the main deflector you will be detected if you are using a passive jammer.

There's lots of funny things you can buy for your car. We once theorized about a RADAR jammer that would override the RADAR's own signal and give it soo much feedback that the radio horn would be fried. It kinda worked except for the fact that the radio horn in those Gatso things are more powerfull then we though and we needed a whole lot of energy and ofcourse not to forget that the whole thing was huge. Worked great on RADAR guns however.

Ofcourse not to forget that the goverment wouldn't be happy if we ever decided to put one of them things on the market. Heck I guess all the radar detectors int he country would be fried within a matter of days.

Doesn't the Valantine One have an available concealer of some sort? I think it does.

My vote is on the V1 as well.

Yes it does. What is the K40? My buddy has one in his M3 and he got stung by the bee a week ago doing 90 in a 65 (late night driving).

Thank you everyone for your advise. At this point I think I will check out the V1. I wanted to be discrete but not at the expense of some kid at Car Toys messing around with my brand new car.

On another note, my sale person called today to see how I like the car and asked if I has pass 120 mph yet. I told him that I was keeping it under 85 for the first 1000 miles as stated in the user manual. He laugh and told me that I really don't need to do that. AMG engine already has some breaking at the factory. What's your opinion on this?

Thanks

Hallo coolsound,

schau doch mal hier zum Thema Zubehör für Mercedes AMG (Anzeige)? Eventuell gibt es dort etwas Passendes.

the V1 is probably the best. they are expensive, and big. mine has trouble with lots of false alarms. it get annoying. we usually use it in the rover on trips, and it is right now in the glove box of the jaguar for when we do sporting driving. I have a bel 940 vector, which is smaller and more sportly looking i use in the bimmer and porsche. it seems to be just as good. it doesn't have all the bells and whistles of the V1, the range might be a bit less, but at half the price, i won't complain.

i'd say you'd be safe with a V1, passport 8500, or bel 985, they are all extremely good.

When I bought my AMG coupe new, the dealer installed all aftermarket custom modifications I had done to the car .... sound system, interior mods, exhaust mods, engine, bodywork, spoilers, wheels, tires, suspension mods, and ofcourse the K40 Radar/Laser System. They did an excellent job and it look so well made and integrated that you would think that it was made into the car while it was being made new at the Benz factory !! Moral of the story is call your dealer and see if they offer any installations, and if they do ask them how much experience their people have with that kind of stuff.

But regardless, the V1 is definitely an excellent system, and much cheaper than the K40 system. I paid $3,500 for my system, but it's so cool it's worth it really. V1 is still great though ...

Also, I was just going to ask you..... how much do you think I could sell a brand new E55 and SL55 for on the market about a year and half from now? I have on order both of those and I'm thinking about selling them when they come and waiting to get the SL 65 with the new 7-Speed tiptronic and the 700 horsepower twin-turbo V-12 engine. I ordered both of them in black and fully loaded with every extra-cost option available I believe

thanks .... and congratulations on your purchase of one of the finest sedans ever made !! :-)

actually, the official number from merc is 612hp for the V12 in SL65, my uncle just got an SL55 AMG, it is a wildly fast car. He has a passport 8500 in his. I'm not a fan of the passports, i like the Bel's, but i have to admit, when it comes down to it, V1 is the best i've seen.

Thank you everyone for your advise. At this point I think I will check out the V1. I wanted to be discrete but not at the expense of some kid at Car Toys messing around with my brand new car.

It's not just for the engine but also for the transmission and drivetrain, it sais so in the manual. If you ever change any parts of the transmission or drivetrain you need to break it in again (It did in mine). Better be safe then sorry, I wouldn't want to ruine my car because of some uninformed sales person.

Excuse me, but I don't think it would be that badly for the Mercedes to drive faster then 85 mph the first mile, but when my father bought this car, he has had it in 155 one hour after he bought it. It might be smart not to drive over 85 mph, but the transmission and all the other things will be wourn out anyway.

if you sat there and drove it wide open for 5 minutes, yeah, it wouldn't be bright. if you smoothly brought it to 85, it would be just fine. it is very important to get the right break in, especially in a car like that.

Car and Driver's test of radar detectors gave VERY low marks to the K40, i know a lot of people say great things about them, but i can't see them being so much better than a Passport 8500, Bel 985, or V1 to justify 3 to 4 times the price.
