I would just like to say that, I pray for the families of all those people, and I know how they feel, because I've went through a couple of hardships and am still going through one.

Just wanted to bring that up.

Me too. Everyone who went through that, and still is - losing homes and family members, deserves a break. I hope 2005 brings the biggest blessings to them.

this has to be the largest single natural disaster in history. a worldwide effort is definitely needed to provide relief. im shocked that there were even deaths in eastern africa!

its an amazing tragedy and i can totally relate since if that were to happen on the eastern us coast there would be one less member on carpassion.

my prayers go out as well

My dad knows a geologican(spell?) and says he follows what is happening around Gran Canaria islands often, he said something about a place where some kind of event is likely to happen in the very near future. He told him that if he would live in the east coast of America he would not feel very safe.

Personally I don't see that a collapsing underwater landmass could make a great tsunami...? Hardly in the Asian calibre, but that's what he said! :-?

Geologist?

It's even been said that the state of Florida is slowly sinking. The tsunami is a tragedy for people, but it's also the planet evolving. The Earth isn't static, it's really a living thing, with a crust made up of large plates that move, causing what are considered natural disasters.

It's a facinating thing, but it's a shame when people are in the way.

You must not know geology very well?? An acre sized part of an underwater mountain breaking off from it's roots would create waves 30-40ft high CONSTANTLY for nearly an hour.

Now you think about a 9+ Richter Scaled (what they claimed it was) earthquake underwater??? I'm VERY surprised whatever country was in the way of that Tsunami is still there. Those Tsunami waves were most definitely 100+ft high for several hours constantly pounding the shoreline or infact the entire countryside.

Just imagine being the several hundred people that were laying on the beach when they saw that massive 100ft wall of water coming your way. There's nothing you would be able to do except wait for it to hit.

When that island sinks, we will supposedly get pounded so hard none of the eastern seaboard will exist.

the tsunami in the indian ocean was only 20ft high and moved at around 500mph. the reason its so devasting is cus its so damn thick.

yes a wave actually breaks but thats not the full effect. it breaks cus it moves so fast. if it were moving at the speed of a normal wave (the ones surfers ride) it would simply be a tide that rised extremely high over the course of a few minutes.

when the canary island situation occurs it will be quite a different situation. the wave will move about as fast, however it will be much larger at the point of origin. depending on where it meets a shoreline, it could be over 400ft. i dont know how much you guys know about the physics of waves particularly in water, but as the water loses depth the wave is slowed down thus the period of the wave is shortened but all that energy goes somewhere: up. and the vertical size of the wave increases dramatically.

nerdy stuff specific to my region, i think its interesting but not necissary to read:

the atlantic shelf that spans from north carolina to massachusetts really never get deeper than 60ft until you get pretty far out. from the harbors in my area its actually 600 miles till you get to the end of the shelf. a large portion of this shelf is actually only 30ft deep in my area. since it only gets 30 ft deep and a wave crumbles when half of it is forced out of water, the largest that can reach va, de, nj, ny, ri, and ct is probably 25-30ft.

this is probably good news to most people in these states since they are usually a few hours from the ocean. not me, i live on an island that is 3ft above sea level, 2 blocks to the bay, and 3 from the ocean. 30 ft is enough to screw things up

a few other facts that are semi comforting are that the shallower the water, the more friction the wave encounters and thus deminishes and a few condos were just built around my house which should provide more shelter than a lumber yard.

sorry for such a long post, but it seemed like there was a bit of misinformation brewing. the only reason i know so much about waves is because only one passion holds a higher standing in my life over cars and that is surfing.

Hallo Speedster25,

schau doch mal hier zum Thema Zubehör für Verschiedenes über Autos (Anzeige)? Eventuell gibt es dort etwas Passendes.
