Ok, since I am not a moderator, I cannot post a poll. But that's not going to stop me.

So right to it: New 5-series styling......Yay, or Nay?

Personally, I give it a big NAY! The car is ugly, you are intitled to your opinions, but common, it's just an ugly car.

P.S. Lets not make this an appraisal of the M5's might, or into a comparison between BMW and MB. If I wanted that, I would have posted this in the Compares forum.

I think its beutiful.I cant see what u dont like about it.I think some people are just shocked buy it looking so different.I on the other hand would expect such a bold leap from bmw.Noone else had the balls to do it.

Ok, so they had balls. Just because they had the balls to do something means nothing. Sometimes, rockin you own style is good. Other times, it can be a costly mistake. Whether or not they had courage, courage is not what sells cars, or what pleases costumers.

i think it isn't perfect, but BMW needed something radical to stop their style from becomming conservative and stagnent like mercedes' has. I think it may just be a marker of the future of automotive style (or atleast the theme). I think they deserve credit for blending classic style with something modern. I think it could have been done better, but that's true of lots of things.

It has 4 doors, 4 wheels, is shiney, has a windshield, a trunk, headlights, blinkers and mirrors! Imagine they'd share so many feautres!

I love BMWs', but I know derivative styling garbage when I see it. I give it a pretty good sized Nay. Having the balls to do something is not nearly as important as having the brains to do it well. The new 5 definitely looks Asian. The whole asthetic that Bangle has brought to the table is qurky and stupid.

Have you seen the new X3? look at the back, the tail lights manage to look like they came from two different cars. BMW design, like a lot of the auto industry is in a dry creative slump. They feel the pressure to be different, but they have no good ideas, no passionate inspiration. That translates into dull looking cars, with blurred reasoning behind why they look the way they do.

I hate the new 5 , just test drove the 545i 6 speed,

and let me tell you this active steering is a pain,

it seems to be allways changing, it also seems that

the idrive has not changed at all. I'm sad to say this

but this thing really sucks. sorry

I used not to like the new 5, but I pretty much changed my impression when I saw a black one with huge wheels parked...It was amazing, it was BIG, stylish, and it made the MB E-class look outdated, boring and half it's size...

Speaking of inventivity, how about the new Renaul Megane hatchback ? I like the looks of the car, it looks very good on the street, although it is very different from almost all cars I think Renault managed to do something different and pretty interesting at the same time. The new Opel Vectra and Vectra GTS also look very good in my opinion.

The first impression of the car is most definately asian, but the more you look at it (and I started hating it, and i have stared at it a lot), the more it seems to be somewhere skirting asian elements of art and something extremely avante garde european. I'm not saying i like it better than the E39, and quite frankly, I think E39 will be thought of as the golden age of BMW after the E30, but the E60 does grow on you. I can honestly say I got used to IDrive (i'm a pretty mechanically minded and technologically savvy person, but my father started to get it after a while in a freind of ours' 745i, so I think it's less than horrible). As to active steering, it is a very good concept, it makes a lot of sense, and you just have to steer actively yourself, you can't work of presaved ideas of ratio in your brain, but adjust to the response of the car in real time. People who like to sleep and drive, beware. It's like driving without power steering after being with it. At first it feels unnatural, stiff, and you don't like it, but quickly you start to feel the advantage, get used to the weight, and the extra feel.

Dang I have a good memory for that stuff . Anyway, I agree, I see a general resemblance in the 5 to the Camry. More than just the fact that they're both sedans with four wheels. They both look Asian, but Camry is Asian. The new 5 needs to be black and have huge wheels just to look decent. Thats true with all the Bangle cars apparently.

And as for Active steering, the only kind of activity I care about is the activity in my hands as I'm steering the wheel. There is no need for them to try to improve upon something that needs no improvement. I don't need the steering constantly changing on me. Thats goofy. I understand how it could be useful, and it's certainly a better idea than straight up steer-by-wire, it may work seemlessly once accustomed to it, but it's still just one more thing getting in the way of purity. At the very least there should be a switch to disengage it.

purity is fine, but the world will change. in a few years, audi, jaguar, mercedes, everyone will have active steering. In two decades it may be all anyone knows. It is a great concept, and I'm sure it isn't too horrible to get used to. It's just different. Different and adjusting aren't always that bad.

And I was just saying that was the image his statement conjured up in my head. I'm not saying all blondes are dumb, i'm saying the image in my head of what he said sounds best out of that picture, that's all.

no, i've got a sense of humor, it just sorta fucks you up when your old man can out drink you and you have to keep him in line. My humor is a lot less composed as it comes off on here. In person i'm a lot more wild. It's hard to put that on a post.

Hey, the new style seems to be winning.

I think it isn't perfect, but it shows potential. With some work they could have something. If they took bangle away from them, and let someone else work them for a bit, i think they could be really really cool.

I know alot of people that hate Bangle becuz most think he's an idiot but have grown to like/buy his designs.

I'm afraid if they bring in sumbody different then they will have a complete makeover depicting a

description of how they would want the BMW, they might drive

away business that people buy from bangle even though alot hate him.

People hate Bangle but still buy BMW cuz they r used 2 his design.

If sumbody brand new cums in and redesigns everything to wat he

thinks everybody will like then that might upset the balanced nature of people

dealin with Bangle's "art" of BMWs and it could bomb out.

So gettin another person to do the designs would be a gr8 idea but it could lead 2 disaster also.
