California Radio / Apple Car Play Umbau

Da ich mich schon seit längerem damit beschäftige, wie man den California auf ein aktuelles System bzw. Apple Car Play umrüsten kann, habe ich endlich eine Lösung in einem US Forum gefunden. Das ganz mit Teileliste und Anleitung.

 

As promised here is a list of what I used along with some helpful links to site and videos.

The original head unit is from a Chrysler so you will see references to these while ordering the parts.

- [ ] Rear camera and cable - I installed the cable under the glove compartment so if I decide to install the camera later so I don’t need to remove the dash again.

- [ ] I used the existing GPS aerial instead of fitting the one that comes with the stereo

 

Tools

- [ ] Allen keys. 3mm and 2.5mm

- [ ] 10mm socket

- [ ] 8 mm socket and 4mm Allen key for steering cowl

- [ ] Screw drivers

- [ ] Trim removal tools

- [ ] Right angle screw driver attachment - very useful!

- [ ] Tools to modify the cage and side spacers - file and saw

- [ ] Wire stripper and crimp tool

These 2 videos helped me a lot.

 

 

CSI dashboard removal - mine differed slightly- mine had screws under the mode/display button and also I removed the temp sensor cover and released the temp sensor as the wire was not long enough.

* RTFM = read the f**king manual. Would have saved me a few hours of work.

If you should attach the microphone cable to the new stereo don’t skip it. Same with the FM-antenna cable. Read the manual so you don’t need to spend a few hours disassemble parts you just reassembled.

 

* take photos of the screws you remove so you don’t end up with 5 different lengths and wonder if you should use 10mm or a 12mm screw in specific places.

* sawing in a removable bracket is needed as the original stereo isn’t a conventional double Din. Be careful. It’s not hard but be careful.

* the Canbus adapter won’t work unless you connect the steering wheel cable. (Don’t end up spending 2 hours for fault searching like me)

Anyway. It took me 10-12 hours to complete the installation. I could probably do it in 6 hours if I need to repeat the work. It’s a little tricky the most complicated I’ve done before is to change the 12V battery. If you have more experience it shouldn’t be a problem at all.

The result is really awesome. I’m really happy that I made the switch. Save the original stereo whenever you want to sell the car as they are expensive and good if the new owner wants to retrofit it back to original.
