No more top speed of 250 km/h on the stronger models by Audi, BMW and Lexus. In quiet they have decided not to limit the topspeed, witch meens that BMW M5 will go 327 km/h from now on. Witch means more accidents on Autobahn for sure. :???:

Where did you get this information from? If Audi, BMW and Lexus (didn't even know Lexus did speedlimiters) would decide to drop the gentlemans agreement they would issue a press release.

There's nothing keeping them from breaking the agreement. There are no penalties or contractual obligations, just an agreement. If they would break the agreement then that would only Leave MB which would also automaticaly mean MB would drop the agreement aswell.

But I don't think they will break the agreement. If BMW and Audi would decide to break the agreement they would've done so before the launch of their new lines. The M5 is out for just about 4 months now and suddenly they decide to remove the speedlimiter. That would leave a huge crowd of very angry first customers. The first buyers are always the most loyal ones which is also a crows you do not want to lose.

I don't know why this paper would lie about it, as just a small article was there telling about it... And it says that only the top of the line cars will loose the restriction. BMW M5 for example, the rest of the BMWs will be restricted.

I still don't think they will do it, atleast BMW won't. Like I said is they were planning on doing so they would've done it before the launch of the M5 and not after.

Removing the speedlimiter means a whole lot of restesting which means spending a whole lot of extra money which they could've saved if they had tested it before the launch.

Second they're not goign to remove the limiter 4 months after the launch of their top product.

Audi is a different story. Audi has been dying to stop the speedlimiter crap for years, even more so after the VW buy out. Everybody will remember the RS6 plus which wasn't limited at 250km/h but at 280km/h.

Don't know where Lexus stands, Lexus is basicly a Japanese brand and I don't think they do speedlimiters. It's the first time I've heard somebody even mention Lexus and speedlimiter in one sentence.

BTW: The 327km/h thing on the M5 is just theoretic. Nobody actually knows how fast it will go without the speedlimiter except maybe a few testengineers at BMW M GmbH. At those speeds your power to speed ratio drop alot because of increased drag and such. Some say that the car is way too underpowered and will reach around 310km/h and others say that the drag coefficient is low enough for it to reach even higher speeds.

We won't know untill somebody manages to remove the limiter all together and get it onto the autobahn.

A BMW press release at one time stated that the E60 M5 is capable of 320 km/h. unlimited, or 205 mph.

Indeed, Lexus has never used limiters that I know of. The LS400 can pull 240+ km./h ( 150+ mph. )

I too question the legitimacy of that report.

BMW has never actually stated that it could do 327km/h but they've hinted it on 2 occasions. The last one was a press release about the gearbox it showed a gearing chart and the line for 7th gear was chopped of at 250km/h. But what BMW did was extend the 7th gear line (dotted) to 327km/h.

I think it could do well over 330km/h with an engine like that but the gearing chart is purely theoretic. Things like drag come into mind when ur cruising at such speeds.

Although the M5 is a pretty low drag design, the capability for 205+ mph. is there I'm sure as well. And with seven gears, it has the legs theoretically.

But this poses another interesting consideration. The M5 speedometer peaks at 330km/h. Anything more than that would be off the chart.

Well Apparently I was wrong. BMW is preparing to offer a Speed Limiter removal as an individual option. this will cost around 2100 euro and if you opt for this option you won't get a warranty on the engine.

:o thats whack. really really whack. it seems like its cheaper to remove the limiter yourself. not that i know how with bmws but its got to be possible for less than 2100 euro.

Yeah I agree... there are aftermarkets mods which allow you to remove the limiter for way less money and are concealed so it's impossible for your dealer to find it. You still have warranty on the engine...

Hallo Thunf,

schau doch mal hier zum Thema Zubehör für Verschiedenes über Autos (Anzeige)? Eventuell gibt es dort etwas Passendes.

exactly. so even if it was more expensive to remove the limiter yourself it is still more valuable than bmws option. you really have to wonder who would get the dealer option....

Now there's for sure true that speed restrictions WILL BE GONE!

Everyone is talking about it, several magazines, individuals writing in newspapers. Most of us is negative about it. A german politician said that he didn't like that a standard Porche boxter S is going 256 km/h, and that is faster than his very much more expensive luxury saloon capable of more speed.

Another mag stated him and the writer asked himself; Haven't these childish people stepped out of the sandbox yet? Sweden have a very long time asked themself if 120 km/h is safe enough instead of 110. So, the germans wants speed restrictions on the roads as speed limiters on the cars are gone, perhaps a good idea? I don't think it is. Autobahn is autobahn, don't change the last unrestricted road! People will die on Autobahn because of the fact that cars will go 250+ km/h. After a while when lots of people have payed their lifes, there will be speed restrictions for sure. What about 2 tonns going in excess of 300? People don't want to brake at that speed, because it's going to take a long time to reach those speeds back again. Risks will be taken to avoid slowing down. WHAT A CRAZY WORLD! And people have to pay for fighting terrorism, when a small decition like this is going to kill lots of more. This is called terrorism, if anything.

Anyone who is dead set toward being legit about everything.

One thing I always thought was whack is when they charge you for having something deleted. Basically making you pay for making life on the production line a little simpler. Having the spoiler on the M3 deleted is a no cost option however. It better be I say.

And to answer Thunf, I agree that in an increasingly crazy world, we don't need higher top speeds. It's not as though 155 mph. is not fast enough to get you somewhere in a jiffy.
