John Deere Gator HPX

Hey ya'll, I recently had the opportunity to drive a John Deere Gator HPX 4x4 - A little utility vehicle that was so fun to drive I felt inspired to open a thread about it on Carpassion.

The Gator has been around for a while, and shares blood lines with other ATV's ( All Terrain Vehicles ). But unlike typical ATV's, the Gator is like a cross between a golf cart and a Hummer. Available in 2-wheel drive and 4x4 with gas or Diesel power, it comes in a wide range of models built to specialize in various capacities such as heavy hauling over paved surfaces, lawn and turf, trails, a smaller model for residential use and even an all electric "E Gator".

The model I drove was a Gator HPX 4x4, part of the High-Performance Series and powered by a 617cc liquid cooled, twin cylinder Kawasaki gas engine. I found the Gator to be a quick and stylish little off-roader with power to spare. Sitting behind the wheel it's easy to appreciate the appeal of miniature vehicles. Being such a small machine, at one point I became stuck between the tire tracks of a mammoth dump truck. But with good pulling power, a two speed transmission offering Hi and Lo forward gears, with seperate modes for two and four-wheel drive - A bit of steering was all that it took for the Gator to pull itself out of a tight and tricky ditch that was easily a two feet deep.

The Gator breaks were decent to good, and handling was sharp, but the steering wheel could be jerky as it picked up every rock in the road ( and the seats, and the frame, etc. etc. ) It's no luxury SUV, but it has a rugged and sparse appeal like that of an old style army Jeep. And the cargo bed which, while shallow can hold a respectable amount of junk, is endearing - Like a pickup truck, except in this truck you can reach everything from the driver's seat. You can't help but have fun in this car, it operates much like a ride on lawn-mower, so it's very simple. The Gator HPX also comes equipped with headlights and an open glovebox. A detachable roof is optional, but for the full on African safari feel, go topless. The John Deere Gator HPX 4x4 is manly enough, but it could still be considered "cute", and you look cute driving it. So chicks dig it.

Yeah, but could a Subaru Sti ATV haul all your lawn tools, and look so good in Kermit green??
