that's really impressive technology. Honda is always a leader and innovator. I can't wait for technology like this to get more distributed. There are no real drawbacks to it. It shows exactly what technology and electronics are really capable of.

it kinda scares me, making my vtec as much of a dinosaur as a pushrod engine. not really but you know what i mean.

also its funny since i start understanding tuning then they get ready to throw something like that into the market that is sooo damn complex. so many variables.

All the complexities are in the electronic operations. It's still a piston engine, so don't worry. That is impressive, hats off to Honda. Germany and Italy may own the driving passion, but nobody seems to innovate and exhibit pure smarts like Japan.

The little combustion pocket is like having a tiny high compression cylinder in each piston, giving the stroke an extra boost. :)

think about it though. such flexibilities with injection timing, along time valve timing and duration. then with your usual ignition timing is a decent amount to be accountable for.

if this will be out in 06 just think of what other companies will be able to do with the same technology in different applications by 08 or 09. maybe im a little too excited, haha. maybe supercomputers will need to be used in deciding the optimum settings for tuning instead of a dyno.

i'm not sure how much i like that that engine isn't opening one of the intake valves nearly all the time. I also have to wonder how responsive that engine can be. It has to adjust a hell of a lot of things. In theory, it could all adjust quickly, in theory. It's a good design, but it appears to be a gas mileage advancement first and foremost. By 2008 i'm sure we'll see an engine that can change itself to running otto cycle when it needs power and atkinson cycle when it needs mileage.

It's a mileage advancment most of all of course, and aside from seeing some cars potentially closing in on 90 mpg or more, the wide spread use of this technology over time would also effect how much fuel the market uses, inturn putting the manipulative oil industry in it's place. Less fuel consumed, prices go down.

The way engines function in regards to timing is very complex anyway, the driver doesn't have to think about it, if many things have to be adjusted at once, engine computers are made for this - it's no sweat. Just look at how seamless variable valve systems have become. If Honda made it, I see this new technology being made smooth, not hurky jerky. If 16 cylinders and their 64 valves can be made to work in unison, than this can work too.
