i asked a general q, i dont really want to change the 5th gear i want to learn bout ratios...

my has 4 speeds!!! (Ford Escort 1.3L)

a gear box basically takes the torque curve of an engine and spreads it out. the longer the gear, the more spread out, and since the curve is being stretched it also diminishes. therefore if you have more gears then the gear ratios can be closer together, shorter, or both providing more torque to the pavement even if the engine power curve is the same. i hope you followed me... i dont think im too good at explaining things like this.

once i tried explaining the difference between horse power and torque to a friend... he was so lost. he just couldnt understand that when you are tuning you really dont car about the hp but the torque curve and that when you are going for performance its the area not the peak. ot sorry

So what's the question here - RmedA wanted to change his ratios, but now just wants to learn more about them?. I think Bleh explained it pretty well actually.

how can i find whats the ratio now (in numbers) and what will happend when i change it to another number and which one can fit and so on...

how are you planning to change the ratios??? digging into a tranny to change individual gear ratios is pretty tough. it makes installing a limited slip diff or a shorter final drive seem as easy as picking your nose. Also installing an lsd or final drive makes changing the clutch, axle or flywheel seem as easy filling your tires with air.

there are many levels of difficulty when dealing with your drivetrain and swapping out different individual gears is the toughest. unless you are a transmission mechanic i wouldnt even think about swapping out individual gears
