What´s the exact difference between torque(Nm) and Hp(or KW)

Hi to all,

I had a discussion with a friend of mine what the difference is between torque and horsepower and why the max. hp is reached at a higher rpm than max torque.

My questions to all experts, I hope to find here, is:

-What is the exact difference?

-How do these two values effect, or are affected by, each other?

-Why do diesel engines have much more torque than gasoline engines?

-How does torque and horsepower affect, and wich is more important to get a good topspeed and acceleration?
