Anyone have any experience with the Bricklins? For those of you who may not know what a bricklin is, it was built in canada in 1974,75,and76 by a very delorean-esque company. The body was all acrylic and came unpainted in one of 4 molded colors. It was ahead of it time in terms of safety and had cool gadgety features like gullwing doors. It was powered by a ford 351 windsor - which, unfortunately due to the gas crisis, was massively detuned to 175 hp. Only 3000 were made, but surprisingly they can be had today for reasonable prices. A buddy of mine is considering one -- having never seen one in person however I cant offer much advice. Any experiences? Anyone looking to learn more can check out www.bricklin.org

Why did my post get moved? A car made in canada out of american parts for exclusive sale in the US could be comsidered semi-american, right?

Geschrieben

True, although I think anything " semi-American " would really be better suited to the " Others " forum. No offense intended. :)

Geschrieben

I can see why not many were made enuff to make a profit.

I'd buy a riced civic be4 that ugly ass thing.

I'm not trying to create ne arguments but thats really ugly and really slow and really a waste of acrylic.

But if ur friend really wants one don't let nebody stop him. It'll be his car if he loves it then thats all that matters.

Geschrieben

the 351 windsor could be tuned for some real power. some very american cars are made in canada and mexico of american parts, like F-150. I say it is american, and pretty cool at that.

Geschrieben

When concerning things like the Bricklin, it gets really complicated. Built in Canada from American mechanicals, specifically for the U.S. market.

Bricklin certainly qualifies as part American, although it was Canadian money that built the Bricklin, I guess what it comes down to is the Nationality of the person or persons who got the Bricklin ball rolling. The one who had the initiative to develop it. Does anyone know where Malcolm Bricklin was from? Though there is a tendancy to label the nationality of cars depending on where they were built. Like Alejandro DeTomaso was from Argentina, and his cars were powered by Ford drivelines, but they were built in Italy. So they're labeled Italian.

No one would dispute that a Ford F-150 built in Canada is still an American truck though. I would even consider the late Beetle built in Mexico as still a German car though unless they altered it a great deal.

Geschrieben

 The beetle a mexican car. Thats hilarious.

Even if it was made in mexico its still a german car nonetheless cuz its powered by germany.

I think the pinto would maybe classify as a mexican car.

I think it would be extremely funny to see mexican design and develop a car.

It's amenities would be different like havin a retractable lighter in the cockpit to light ur joint,

specially designed holster for all ur crackhead needs and prolly a lil disco ball with millions of colours

comin out for when ur trippin really bad on all ya drugs lmao

Something tells me you've spent a little time South of the border? Or maybe just watched too much Cheech and Chong. :D

Geschrieben

I've been 2 Cancun a couple of times and thats ALL there is 2 do there except sleep with ho's lol.

That's all my friends did when we were down there and i jus drank liquor cuz drugs r bad mmmkay.

So yeah i know a lil how they think down there its all, puff-puff pass and then pass out lol.

Geschrieben

hmm. i don't remember cancun at all like that. I guess it might be that i never left the all inclusive resort and just sat around the pool all day? :D

Anyhow, mexico is industrializing. I think bricklin is a canadian car, if you want to be techinical, but it has an american spirit. Malcolm Bricklin is a very very english name.

I think the bricklin is actually pretty cool looking -- You have to love anything with gullwing doors :)

The idea of the design -- acrylic body panels, gullwing doors, integrated bumpers--- it's the idea of the car that is cool.. The model name being the SV1 (safety vehicle one) and the available colors being SR, SG, SO (safety red, safety green, safety orange etc.) show how theme of the vehicle was really taken to all extents. It's really too bad that it was released in such a detuned form, but like fox said, tuning the 351 windsor is not hard. A different intake manifold with a 4 barrel carb and some headers to a set of flowmasters would really wake that motor up. -- Not that it would have to be fast to be fun, but a little freed up hp never hurt anyone.

Anyone ever actually seen one of these things in person?

Geschrieben

I've never seen a Bricklin on the street, it reminds me of a Griffith or whatever that Beetle powered kitcar was, except better looking.

I thought the safety color choices of the Bricklin were some sort of link to a Homland Security site for a second. We are now at danger level Saftey Orange. I think it's a cool car, especially the wheels and tires. Very old school 8) .

you know what would be an even better all american supercar?

from my understanding, it is fairly easy to slip a 350 into a pontiac fiero, if you are talented, you can also force a 454 in there, but the 350 is a better choice, that just seems to be a very interesting idea.

Geschrieben

I think I've seen a Fiero like that in town, a shiny black one with Ferrari 328-like body mods. And it was obvious that it wasn't powered by anything less than 8 cylinders.

Geschrieben

if i bought an american car, that would be it, i'll tell ya.

Geschrieben

Fox, you have a secret thing for the Fiero do you? I've often thought of a modern day Fiero. That could really be something even with existing parts bin stuff with maybe a mid-mounted 3.8 liter Series III supercharged V6, and the F1 style TAPshift controls. It should have it's own platform though.

Geschrieben

well, seeing as a fiero is about lightweight tight handling we can beat the little european cars at their own game type of car, the Series III 3800SC being heavier than bricks wouldn't go well.

Did i mention it's coming back?

It's going to be called the pontiac solstice, it will be powered by a mid mounted 2.2L supercharged ECO-Tech good for 230hp, acceleration to sixty is set for low 5s, price tag is mid twenties, and a budget (possibly superchargerless) version is slated to come out wearing a saturn badge.

I think this does justice!

WHOOOP WHOOOP HIJACK IN PROGRESS WHOOP WHOOOP!!

No big deal.. a new fiero huh? Do you think this ^^^^ car will actually happen? I doubt it but would like to see it..

Geschrieben

JT don't make fun of the Fiero, I think it was wild idea from GM. A mid-engined budget sportscar?

I've never heard of the Solstice going into production, but I kind of like it, especially the front. It'll be cool if it does. A Saturn version, that should be interesting.

Geschrieben

I wasnt making fun of the fiero.. just comenting on my bricklin thread being hijacked (going OT)

I dont know much about the original fiero.. didn't they have a massive recall of those for them blowing up in a collision or something?

Geschrieben

for a long time the fiero was the only american car i really had a lot of respect for. i've thought of buying one a ton of times (and putting a decent engine in it). it just never happened.

Rick Wagoner says that if they can build it for price targets, both solstice and the saturn equivalent will see produciton. They are both based on the Vaxhaull 220 roadster. he said he's optimistic they'll see production.

Geschrieben

New article in C&D says the solstice is a go for 2005. It's on an all new "kappa" platform. Plans are for the solstice to be a convert. only but the saturn to be in coupe and wagon form. Power is to be 2.4L? 4 w/ 170 hp and a 240 hp FI version to be released later... WHY LATER? why even bother making the slow one?

Geschrieben

170hp really isn't bad for that light of a car, it will be cheap, accesible, and not everyone needs top speed. Given i'd but it with the supercharger, that's just me. I think this will own the sub 30k american car, and even the sub 30k car all together from the looks of it.

Geschrieben

I think they tend to introduce the tame model first to test the waters and be on the safe side, just in case the product tanks. The Saturn wagon version should be pretty cool. A " Redline " version of this car should be inevitable, supercharged is a safe bet.

Bricklin, Fiero, Solstice. We're still on the subject of little cars at least. :)

Geschrieben

it might happen, but look for the saturn one to be very stripped down.

so currently a redline ion is supercharged, a reline vue is powered by honda, and a redline saturn whatever they call this is stolen from pontiac. darn.

pontiac, and in fact america need a car like this.
