the great part is that they don't need it.

I like turbos a lot. I just think it would kill part of the feel of what a BMW is.

totally agree with you fox. if anything BMW should use a supercharger if they want to apply boost to any of their engines. a turbo would ruin (like you said) the feel of their engines and everything they have come to be known for.

there was talk a while back of using a low inirtia supercharger on some bimmer engines. This way you could boost - get more go - especially bottom end, but not take the quick revving responsiveness out.

To apply american logic to german cars, if it aint broke - don't fix it. I don't think bimmer has any trouble with their engines not being strong enough, so I don't know they need to worry about charging yet.

Then again, Audi, Merc, and Jaguar are charging their engines now, maybe bimmer needs the low inirtai S/C just to keep up?

imagine the 5.5L V10 for the next gen M5 with a supercharger.

I don't think anything short of a koenigsegg, mclaren, lambo, or porsche GT could keep up.

I'm glad they have stayed away from super/turbo chargers. I love bimmer engines just the way they are. In my opinion some of the best out there. Can't wait to see the new V10 for the M5.

i think it will be a true screamer. I am very impressed with BMW for debuted gas direct injection in cars. That is a big step forward. Also - the 5.5L is supposed to have a magnesium block. If they pull that one out, I'll be truly amazed.

I am the biggest fan of their big straight sixes.

I was just reading smomething about bimmer's new V10, apparently it will redline at 9000rpm!!! individual throttle boddies, direct fuel injetion, double vanos, and now you are saying they might be using a magnesium block. JESUS this will be one hell of an engine if all holds true. Mind you the site I was on may just be specualting as to what the engine might contain as BMW is very tight lipped about the subject. I hvae total faith in BMW however and can see most of this in the engine. One question why would they use individual throttle bodies over their new valvetronic setup?? Valvetronic is supposed to eliminate some pumping losses within the engine so wou;dn't it be the better choice for a 9000rpm screamer?

Geschrieben

The individual throttle bodies is a feature of the current M engines. I am nearly positive that Valvetronic will be used in place of throttle bodies. Either way, both are bmw exclusives in the auto industry and are very efficent. BMW has yet to put out a crumby production engine. Especially not on an M car.

Geschrieben

yeah I have total faith in BMW. they have never put out a shitty engine especially M engines. I can hardly wait to see the new V10. as for valvetronic I don't see why they wouldn't use it. M engines are always a tour de force of BMW tech.

Geschrieben

well I have seen atleast 1 shitty engine that came out BMW's factories. The engines in the 520 stutter when you punch it too hard, like as if it couldnt get enough fuel or air. This only happend in 1st or 2nd gear. Once you got upto speed (3th gear or more) it's a smooth ride.

I have seen this on many 520's, it's hard to explain but you when you're paying attention you can feel it shocking. The 525 doen't have this.

Geschrieben

the 520 never came to the US, but I'll take your word for it. The 2.7L I6 that came here in the 80s wasn't a race-car motor, but it was smooth and torquey. That's the closest thing to a crap motor I can think of out of them.

Hallo Nitrous_Oxide,

schau doch mal hier zum Thema Zubehör für Verschiedenes über Autos (Anzeige)? Eventuell gibt es dort etwas Passendes.

Are you sure the U.S. never got the 520? I thought Canada had the 520, which would almost certainly mean the U.S. would have it too. At least the older versions. What about a 525 or 528?

And "crap motor"? I don't think you should call BMW motors "crap" at all, if you fear for your life! I think fans of BMW are some of the most loyal and crazy, and something lke that could get you in some serious mess! Just J/K BTW.

i've never seen a 520 in the US.

even BMW can make a mistake.

i should direct you to the connecting rod issue on the e46 M3's I6.

Overall, i think they do make the best engines in the world though.

Geschrieben

What connecting rod issue?

and yes, I couldn't agree more, they make kick-ass engines, and the best ones.

apparently the connecting rods on the engine break. like snap. Only when the car is driven very aggressively, but still - things breaking under aggressive driving is not expected on a bimmer, so they had to extend the engines warrantee to compensate.

Fox, didn't you mean intercoolers cool the air down before it enters?

Geschrieben

the charger, yes. if it were after it would be an aftercooler.

What's the most powerful turbo out there right now? (Not just in the market).
