I have just seen the results of the top speed poll.

Guys Grow up.....

I refuse to believe that 12 percent of have you have driven at speeds of, or exceeding 220mph. A few of you (extravangantly rich, ridiculously brave/stupid, unbelievably lucky) may have - the rest of you are are talking rubbish.

Driving ANY car over 150mph on Public roads takes great courage, immense skill, and a totally empty road.....

Don't ruin a fabulous website by telling lies about your experiences. If you really have driven at such speeds (in such cars).....I would love to hear about it - so post your experience.

The maximum genuine truth I have ever heard, was on a public Motorway in England (the M1) and was an indicated 195mph (so realistic 180-188mph) on a Suzuki GSX-R 1300 Hayabusa in the middle of the night....

So unless you can back it up - don't lie.

Hehe 220mph or 354km/h. Since this is a car site and the questions is about cars. So no "Yeah im a pilot drive over 1000mph every day" comments. Its true the Busa is the fastest stock MC out there 340km/h for stock. But how many people can drive it?. I got passed once by a busa that was driving over 300km/h. Dont think many people know how fast that is. I heard later the guy was a good driver with a turbobusa. About cars as the question was. Record for flying km by streetcars here in Sweden the car(Detomaso Pantera) was a bit over 360km/h in the end. I know theres some faster cars and better roads now for beat that but its still impressive numbers. Should also say that this is real speed.

Geschrieben

I can only speak for myself. I have driven 350km/h or around 220mph several times. This poll is only 1 day old so let's wait a couple of days to see a final result.

At the moment there is only 1 vote for 220mph and that was me. We have 26 votes in total.

Geschrieben

Unfortunately I didn't know how many votes there had been so it looks like I am grossly mistaken.....

Roland - sorry mate - I didn't know it was you!

It will be interesting to see the results when more votes come in.....

Either way - 220mph is STAGGERING!!! (I imagine that even lifting out of the throttle too quickly at that speed can be dangerous!)

I won't lie - at 150mph the white lines in the road appear to become continuous and I don't even like to look at the speedometer because I have to take my eyes off the road.

As far as I am concerned (at least with my car) the problem of ultra high speed driving is NOT aerodynamic stability......

It is finding a piece of road which is long enough but most importantly EMPTY ENOUGH!

Normal drivers are just not able to deal with a car overtaking them, travelling at 150mph+!

Roland, Seb, do you agree?

I have to ask you Roland.... what car were you driving? where? and at what time of day??

I dont know how it is in England Manu but here in Sweden i think some of the roads are very good. Finding road i dont think is the biggest problem. In Germany also some of the roads are very good. Check this movie http://www.bmw850csi.de/mpegs/A2.mpg maby should right click and save target as. Movie is 50mb if i remember right. I heard from a friend why they limit the road to 75mph was that it wasnt good enough for free speed. Hehe its f**king cool that you can drive that fast and pass a police car like nothing in 250km/h.

Hehe still remember i was out with a friend in his little Nissan Micra. It was a 2 lane road. We get passed by a M5 that was driving maby 250km/h. Well we were pretty close to blow off the road. Was real scary.

Roland 350km/h hehe. I would guess a tuned Diablo or Porsche. Probably the Mclaren F1 on the site. Roland would be nice if you recorded it and put it on the site next time. Hmm the speed that many tuners try to beat these days on street is 347km/h. Hold by a RUF Porsche. Think it was set in New Zeeland. There are older records that are much faster but this is today. For example Blitz made a special project called 348 to beat the speed. They manage 346km/h on autobahn if i remember right. Roland the 350km/h is that real speed?.

Seb, ok you are right. I had 355 km/h on the clock so I guess I drove around 340-345 real km/h.

Geschrieben

Must be a nice friend to borrow out his $1 000 000 car for a friend to drive 355km/h. Wonder how it feels to get passed by a car in that speed.

Roland - a McLaren F1.... eh?

At £25,000 for JUST A SERVICE, it HAS TO BE bloody GOOD.

I have read that the Ferrari F50 is actually faster around a circuit than the Mclaren but the Mac is faster in a straight line....perhaps one day I could drive one of either.....

Seb - now THAT is what I call a road!!!!!!

Seen that video of the Japanese F40 at 200mph on the Jap motorway.....?

Yeah its VW test track Ehra-Leissen. Two 9km straights and i have heard you can drive 250km/h in the corners. Better then the Nardo in Italy. The picture is from the record braking Mclaren F1 think the speed was 391km/h.

wow... I feel like a little fish when I read all your comments.

The maximum speed i ever reached when i was driving a car is 235 km/h (on the compteur). On a German Highway (going down) with a new Lexus 200. (a company car)

I believe, anyway, that it is almost impossible to reach and to keep the 300 km/h (or more) on an highway in my country (Belgium) because even at 200 km/h, you always have to brake for some stupid ass not looking in his mirrors and going on the left lane at 135 km/h !!

The fastest I´ve ever driven by myself was ~ 188mph in a F 550 Maranello in 1998/99 (?).... great, but I suppose that 220 mph are an other world of driving...........

I drove at 200 km/h with an audi a8 (but my girlfriend was in de back and she wouldn't let me go any faster  ) Then one time alone in an audi allroad 2.7T went up to about 220 km/h. I'm happy that I live near the border with germany  I find 220km/h fast already, probably at 350 km/h i would piss my pants, haha.

Well, Living in the US limits how fast you can drive. I took a freinds turbocharged corvette 109mph over a two lane bridge in clearwater florida (I wasn't brave enough to go faster. By they way - I was at 109 in well under 10 seconds. I took the old man's Jaguar 3.0 Sport (yeah, the title is in my dad's name) to a 121mph (i know it was about 121, i past 120 on the speedo - but hadn't hit the speed limiter cut off yet). The car felt pretty stable - relatively smooth (the turnpike is a good road), aerodynamically i wasn't too worried. Stearing was a bit twitchy. I am sure I owe a great deal of this stability to the ASC and AWD systems (all of the computers trying to stop me from messing up). Anyhow, stuff flew by. It was at 3 in the morning no less - and the patterns from the lights on the road went from many to one. I had to pull into a service plaza to waste some time (the tickets are stamped when you get on the turnpike - if I covered 20 miles in 9 minutes, they would send me a rather large ticket). Anyhow it was a blast. At the moment, the car I drive around - a Suzuki XL-7 - can only be taken to about 100 before things get scary. I can cruise comfortably on highway 94 here in minnesota at 95 (with my Valentine One on the dash of course) - but over 100 - it starts to get scary - it is very suseptable to crosswind. Highway 94 isn't the best either. The Land Rover protests being driven over 95 anyhow - despite being rated to a 116mph topspeed. Between an engine that is dead above 3,500 - and being over 6 feet tall, landrover is not a "fast car". By best freind just bought a WRX - so I may have another story soon.

And to those of you who lie about driving fast - why? What is the point. A: If you claim to have driven over 170mph - it sure as hell wasn't in the USA, and if you have gone over 220 - you can testify to the fact that it is intense. All you are concentrating on is to keep going 220+, and not dieing. Speaking of fast - anyone here a pilot. I am currently training to be an airline pilot - and have pushed over 460knots (500+mph) in a Citation Jet. Try that in your lamborghini. Seb - I won't claim to go 1,000mph every day - but in a few years I can claim 500. Leave that afterburning - vibrating Mach 2 insanity for the airforce boys - that is the only perk in their job anyhow.

I know it's an old topic that hasn't had a response in a while... But, I will throw in my 2¢

I have to put in two categories. One is driving a car that would go over 200, but had no where to push that line. Two is driving a personal car near its limits.

Back in 1991, I took a 1979 Porsche 930 for a test drive :o . It was for sale from our local dealer here. I can't remember the price now, but do remember that there was no way in hell I could afford it at the time since I was a wee 21 year old just getting my business started. A friend of mine was a salesman at the dealership, and allowed me a "quick" drive. The car was a former racing car with twin turbo's (if memory serves) and every performance option available at the time (can't remember what class or owned by whom). But, it was driven to 190 MPH on a fairly regular basis in its history, and had been put back in streetable form with the performance almost entirely intact.

Now, to my drive. All I remember is stepping on the gas and looking down as the needle ripped towards 60 (I guarantee under four seconds!). I shifted into second and let off the gas at about 75! I never got it any faster than that, but I knew what this car was capable of! To this day, I wish I had a place to really see what that car could do. Even more so, I wish I knew where that car was so that I could "try" and pry it from its owner :D !

Now for the second car. Since I could not afford to buy this car, I settled for a 1989 Mustang GT Convertible in 1992 (I love driving topless). It was in great shape as it was owned by a guy who owned a detail/speed shop. It had been fairly heavily modified from top to bottom in the engine compartment (no turbo, charger, or NOS). But from heads and pistons, to intake, to cam, to exhaust, to trans and gears... All had been revamped. Stock 89 GT's were good for a little under 6½ to 60MPH and a top speed of maybe 130? Now don't get me wrong, this was no supercar, but it held its own. It cornered like a small truck compared to my Speedster, but would likely take it in a straight line. It would hit 60 MPH in a little over 5 (quicker than the Speedster), and I am not positive where its top end was. If the Speedster was new off the showroom, I think it would be a closer run.

I do remember travelling a road between my home town and a small town to the south a couple of times and stretching it out. This road has a stretch of about 50 miles where there is guaranteed to be no police, and has straight stretches of 2-3 miles at a time (I have also stretched the Speedster a bit there). The speedometer topped at 145, and on those couple of occasions I buried the needle with almost a grand to the redline to go. If I had to guess, I think it was good for around 160-165 before implosion...lol. I did love the rumble of that tuned V8... But, it still pales in comparison to the sound and feel of a finely tuned Porsche 911 3.6. This summer, my Speedster will get a turbo and major tune all around. I'm not sure what I will be able to get out of her, but I am sure it will soundly out perform the old Ford, and should put me a little closer to that elusive 200 mark. Then if I am not satisfied, I will search out more ways to get more out of her... 8)

I will let you know where the Speedster ends up when she is finished.

I 2nd that.... I refuse to believe 12% of these liars have "driven" at 354KPH. That's death-speed. At 220MPH half of you would probably wet yourselves. Admit it. No need in lying. I for example, have never driven over ~175MPH (~280KPH). And I admit it. Furthermore I can't accept the fact that 12% actually own cars that can pull off 220MPH!

I think that speeding in a car is not so bad!you must try speeding on a bike there you realy feal the SPEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEED!IF YOU HAVE THE BALLS THAT IS! :D Not for people with heart problems! :D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

Geschrieben

hey, driving at the limits is what gives you the rush that driving is all about. I admit I spontaniously floor my car and don't back off till top speed from time to time. My passengers have wet themselves before (no lie). I think there really aren't many places you could go 220mph, i have a hard enough time finding a place to get up towards 150 with any degree of safety. there are not enough cars and drivers out there capable of that speed that that many of you could have gone that fast.

Geschrieben

I completely agree with your last sentence. There just aren't that many cars out there capable of even 160MPH. Let alone 220! And not everyone has the testicular fortitude to actually go through with such things as hitting 350KPH+.

Fox, if your passengers have wet themselves with you driving, what would they do with me at the helm?!! They'd probably die!

Geschrieben

you underestimate my driving.

It isn't that it is too extreme (well, yeah, actually it is), but it is how spontaneous it is. I have a list of people that is disturbingly long who will not ride with me ever again. I have a bad habit of pulling figure eights in foul weather - with my foot pinned to the floor.

Geschrieben

Well, let's see, I don't think I even have a list (and I probably never even would) of people who won't ride with me due to my unique driving habits. But I'll tell you there would never even be anyone on the list because they'd probably all be dead. Just ask the last guy who was in the Del Sol I drove for a minute. He won't ever make THAT mistake again! I've floored it in many cars before, and most of the cars responded very well, surprisingly. But the people inside (and outside) the cabin of the car aren't too impressed, nor are they able to answer me when I call their names. I don't think I would drive as well as you, but I'm definitely crazier in the things I would do with a car. Try cornering with a BMW 5 at 90MPH... people and animals alike leap for cover in sheer freight. These are just words, but if you ever lend me your Boxster, you'll see what I mean. You won't like me going near your car after that one, I can assure you.
