The most dyno proven hp out of the E36 M3 that I have seen is 260-265 rear wheel horsepower. This comes with extensive modification, though. Expect to add cams, an intake manifold, header, replace the cats with straight pipes, change the injectors -- all very expensive but not as expensive as an FI setup I guess

the most I've seen from a US spec E36 is around 265 or 270 at the rear wheels and that was with some pretty major engine work. The euro spec E36 M3 had 321hp at the crank(post 1995) but was a much different motor (6 throttle bodies). You could probably get numbers around or higher than the 93-95 euro M3 (286 at the crank) with the mods listed in jterp's response. If you stick with more basic stuff like ECU upgrade, CAI and exhaust upgrades, you'd probably gain about 25hp max.
