Well set for series production: Mercedes-Benz unveils a new interpretation of the Vision Grand Sports Tourer

Stuttgart, Dec 19, 2003 - Mercedes-Benz will pave the way for a new vehicle category when it unveils the Vision Grand Sports Tourer – a new take on the groundbreaking touring saloon concept – at the North American International Auto Show in January 2004. Series production development of this Mercedes model has already reached an extremely advanced stage. "The new Vision Grand Sports Tourer from Mercedes-Benz is a highly appealing and versatile touring car that offers space, comfort and power. This latest trend-setter will enable us to gain a firm foothold in what is a new and exciting market segment in early 2005. We believe that the concept offers enormous potential for the launch of a new Mercedes model family", says Professor Jürgen Hubbert, member of the DaimlerChrysler AG Board of Management and head of the Mercedes Car Group.

Thanks to its intelligent use of space, the Mercedes concept offers first-class comfort for up to six occupants. Featuring comfortable individual seats and high-grade appointments, the luxurious interior has everything it takes to ensure exemplary driving enjoyment whilst touring. Further innovative features of the Vision Grand Sports Tourer include a newly developed diesel hybrid powerplant which develops 234 kW.

The new SLR McLaren high-performance sports car celebrates its American premiere at the Auto Show in Detroit. In addition, the powerful E 320 CDI becomes the latest diesel model to be unveiled by Mercedes-Benz in the US. Delivering highly impressive performance and fuel consumption, it is set to open up a lucrative new segment in the American passenger car market.

Grand Sports Tourer: saloon, van, estate and SUV all in one

First unveiled by Mercedes-Benz in 2002, the Grand Sports Tourer idea combines the best features of familiar vehicle concepts such as the touring saloon, van, estate and Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) to create a new and unique entity. This Mercedes concept thus offers comfort, space and practicality as well as meeting extremely high stan-dards in terms of performance and driving dynamics. It also provides outstanding long-distance comfort. In other words, it is an all-new interpretation of the "touring car".

Mercedes-Benz created this concept in response to the desire among modern-day drivers for a versatile car which, as well as being ideal for the family, recreation, travel and work, also features elegant design and the leading-edge technology for which the brand is renowned. The concept of the Grand Sports Tourer is the result of intensive dialogue between the Stuttgart-based manufacturer and customers from all around the world. These discussions form the basis of new and exciting vehicle concepts such as the Vision Grand Sports Tourer and the recently unveiled Vision CLS.

Design: the perfect blend of elegance, dynamism and supremacy

The new Mercedes-Benz show car is concrete proof that the Grand Sports Tourer has evolved from a design study and is ready to be phased into series production. It features a host of exciting details that are sure to arouse great interest. One of the main features that contributes to the dynamic appearance is the arc-shaped contour of the roof line which forms a powerfully smooth link between the A-pillar and C-pillar, thus projecting the desired "coupé-like" image. These lines lend the concept car a sporty elegance that belies its impressive size.

Other prominent characteristics of the Grand Sports Tourer, such as assurance and high performance, are highlighted by the design of the radiator grille with its wide aluminium louvers as well as the powerful contours of the bonnet and the prominent bumper. The pronounced wedge shape of the front end adds further emphasis to this design language.

Interior: relaxed touring for up to six occupants

A large panoramic glass roof stretches practically the entire distance between the windscreen and the rear end, bathing the interior in light. Up to six occupants can enjoy the relaxing ride in the luxurious individual seats. In terms of interior space, meanwhile, the distance of 920 mm between the first and second seat rows makes for first-class travel comfort. The centre consoles between the individual rear seats feature extra stowage compartments as well as large drinks holders for cups or bottles.

Furthermore, separate DVD/CD players for the second and third seat rows, complete with headphones, allow the rear passengers to enjoy their own chosen brand of entertainment. The colour displays are built into the rear of the front head restraints and the rear centre console.

This new vehicle concept, developed by Mercedes-Benz in its own inimitable style, is a response to a desire for a versatile car that can be quickly and easily adapted to perform a wide range of transport tasks. A desire expressed by families for whom sport and recreation are priorities. Hence the four rear seats can be folded individually to create up to 2030 litres of luggage space (according to the VDA measuring method), which is substantially more than a conventional luxury estate can offer. In addition, the flat load compartment floor and the large tailgate make loading and unloading a great deal easier.

The dashboard features a sophisticated design as well as an aluminium and fine-wood trim to further enhance appeal, whilst the aluminium surrounds for the COMAND display and air conditioning controls on the centre console provide another eye-catching interior detail.

By incorporating the very latest in transmission electronics, the Mercedes engineers were able to dispense with the conventional automatic selector lever on the centre console, replacing it with a lever on the steering column and control buttons on the steering wheel. This configuration gives the driver the ability to change gear manually - Formula-1-style – and thus make optimal use of the vehicle's highly impressive performance characteristics in any situation on the road.

Another benefit of this sophisticated shift-by-wire technology is that the driver's hands always remain exactly where they belong - on the steering wheel.

Hybrid drive: From zero to 100 km/h in only 6.6 seconds

A powerful diesel/electric hybrid drive system is further proof of the innovation at the heart of the Vision Grand Sports Tourer concept. In models such as the Grand Sports Tourer, the electric motor is set to become an indispensable companion to the diesel engine, since it helps to further reduce fuel consumption and emissions without compromising on agility, comfort and driving enjoyment.

This powerful hybrid consists of the state-of-the-art V8 diesel engine with 184 kW/250 hp from the S-Class and an electric motor (50 kW). As a result, the vehicle has 234 kW of total power and 860 Nm of torque available — top performance levels for this drive technology, which guarantees dynamic driving enjoyment. The Vision Grand Sports Tourer, for example, has the acceleration of a sports car — it can sprint from zero to 100 km/h in just 6.6 seconds. The car’s top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h.

The diesel hybrid system’s fuel consumption is equally exemplary, delivering 30 mpg (miles per gallon) according to the American measurement method. With future engine generations, the drive concept of the Vision Grand Sports Tourer will offer the potential for even more impressive fuel efficiency, at 33 mpg. In the European driving cycle, the Vision Grand Sports Tourer with a hybrid drive uses about 20 percent less fuel than a comparable diesel model.

Electronically controlled distribution of the workload between the diesel engine and the electric motor enables the benefits of both drive concepts to be used to the full: the electric motor kicks in when starting off, parking, driving in stop-and-go traffic or crawling in heavy traffic when less power is required, thus ensuring zero-emission motoring. Only when more engine power is required does the eight-cylinder CDI powerplant spring into life to provide powerful acceleration. During braking, the electric motor acts as a generator and produces current for recharging the drive battery.

The Vision Grand Sports Tourer breaks new ground by featuring a hybrid drive system in conjunction with permanent all-wheel drive – a combination which offers further proof of the concept's immense potential.

Additional technical highlights of this Grand Sports Tourer concept include a set of 21-inch wheels as well as large, perforated brake discs, AIRMATIC air suspension and sophisticated axle assemblies, all of which are designed to ensure optimal long-distance comfort and an outstanding level of active safety.

SLR McLaren: a Gran Turismo for the 21st century

The new Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren is an impressive testament to the expertise and experience of Mercedes-Benz and its Formula-1 partner McLaren in the development and production of high-performance sports cars.

With its 5.5-litre displacement, the supercharged engine at the heart of the sophisticated Gran Turismo develops an output of 460 kW/626 hp and delivers its peak torque of 780 Nm from 3250 rpm – a figure which remains constant across a broad engine speed range of up to 5000 rpm. This means that the SLR eight-cylinder is among the most powerful engines currently available for series-produced roadgoing sports cars. This high-performance car takes just 3.8 seconds to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h, it passes the 200-km/h mark after just 10.6 seconds, and it takes only 28.8 seconds to reach 300 km/h. Its top speed is 334 km/h.

In order to meet the highest of standards in terms of handling at high speed, directional stability and the cooling-air requirements for high-performance cars of this kind, Mercedes-Benz worked with McLaren on developing this model's superlative aerodynamics. The result is exemplary roadholding plus the on-road safety standards for which Mercedes-Benz is renowned. Following extensive wind-tunnel tests, the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren was given a virtually smooth underbody with a special six-channel diffusor under the rear. Both features are familiar design principles from Formula 1. They ensure that the airflow beneath the vehicle is virtually unimpeded and that negative lift, or downforce, is produced at higher speeds.

Additional downforce is provided by the adaptive spoiler at the rear of the SLR. From a speed of 95 km/h, it automatically adopts a ten-degree position, increasing the contact pressure at the rear axle. The spoiler also doubles as an air brake.

Safety: high-tech materials from the world of Formula 1

The SLR McLaren is made almost entirely from carbon-fibre composite (CFRP). This lightweight yet extremely rigid material originated in the aeronautical and space industries and has also proven its benefits in today's Formula-1 race cars. The weight advantage of this high-tech material over steel is around 50 percent. In addition, the carbon fibres are characterised by four to five times higher energy absorption than steel and aluminium in the event of an impact. Mercedes-Benz therefore uses two 620-mm side member elements made from carbon fibre in the front structure of the SLR. These elements absorb all the crash energy in the defined frontal impact test.

The occupant compartment is also made entirely of CFRP, thus ensuring that the survival space remains largely intact, i.e. undamaged, even in the event of a side or rear impact. Adaptive airbags, newly developed kneebags and sidebags as well as belt tensioners round off the comprehensive safety equipment package.

Mercedes-Benz also uses groundbreaking technology to produce the brake discs. They are made of fibre-reinforced ceramic, which gives them extreme fade-resistance and great durability. In addition, the brakes work in tandem with the electrohydraulic brake system Sensotronic Brake Control (SBC™) to ensure exceptional deceleration rates which impressively underline the race-car character of the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren.

E 320 CDI: diesel premiere in the US

The six-cylinder E 320 CDI Saloon is the latest diesel model to be unveiled in the US by Mercedes-Benz – the brand with the greatest tradition and most impressive expertise of all when it comes to producing diesel engines for passenger cars. The Stuttgart-based manufacturer believes its powerful and economical CDI models have an excellent chance of success in the American market – and not just among loyal diesel customers.

Developing 150 kW/204 hp (U.S.: 201 hp), the direct-injection diesel engine pro-duces its peak torque of 500 Nm (369 lb-ft) from just 1800 rpm. It combines excellent acceleration and impressive pulling power with an exemplary fuel consumption of only 6.9 litres per 100 km (total NEDC consumption) and achieves in the American test procedure around 35 mpg*. In everyday operation, it is therefore far superior to comparable vehicles with gasoline or hybrid drive systems.

first off, the last thing mercedes needs right now is more models, they arleady have more than enough. Who would want that ugly mercedes minivan, aside from being a model no one wanted, a minivan is not adventagious for prestige.

Despite all of its design and engineering elements, the SLR didn't do too well in the motor trend road test, not performing as well as the numbers would have you think. They said it was an amazing car, but it just wasn't what we had all hoped for, cerainly nothing to threaten F1.

The only really cool thing there was the E320CDI, i've wanted a good german midsize diesel to come here for a while, i think a lot of people who buy an E320 really would like the CDI better.

Listen to them talk up that minivan, highly appealing to whom? Trend-setter? Please :roll: . That thing looks suspiciously like a Chrysler Atlantic. Those saps from Stuttgart are a little late to the ballgame, this is hardly a new and exciting segment, maybe for them. But Mercedes has yet to realize that some things they are just getting into have been done much better before. Their " flavor " is not always the best ever.

And the SLR, I knew that would never be a serious contender for any kind of record. Except perhaps that of most over-priced production car. Think about it, every single thing that MB creates can't possibly be really profitable, yet they still don't mind throwing development money away on the most petty of projects. It tells you that the money you spend on a new Mercedes is not paying for your car, but something else.

here's how i see it, C-Class simply doesn't stack up to 3-series (every indapendant review to compare them agrees with me), the E-Class doesn't have the trendy image the 5 and A6 hold, and also doesn't have driving dynamics to match (though it has gotten very close), and the S-Class is the most expensive car in its segment, despite not having any unique characteristic to justify the price difference. ML-Series is getting old, and has had awful build quality history, SL and CL are not produced in enough volume to matter one way or the other, and CLK now has to contend with what looks like an extremely competitive 6-Series, mercedes needs to spend all of that development money on its important lines. Refine the S-Class, get new features and find means to lower the price so it can be competitive, refine and promote the E-Class, which has real potential, overhaul completely the ML and SLK, and spend money to improve C-Class so it can compete, restore the prestige to the mercedes name, get the bread and butter mercedes cars back to where they need to be.

I think MB is marketing the GTS in the wrong market. Minivans are a hot item here in europe, they have enough room for the whole family and luguage if needed. The hybrid diesel electrical engine would make it a smash hit over here.

I think MB made a huge mistake introducing the Vaneo and Viano, they just should've introduced the GTS and get it over with. But then again have you guyz seent he specs of the GTS? It's huge, SUV huge. So to please people who don't want a huge van but still want a mercedes they need the other lines.

MB should be more selective to what cars they put out on the market.

Well lets' see, as of 2004, Mercedes has 37 seperate models available - and thats' just on the U.S. market! Thats' insane! Jurgen Schrempp himself probably couldn't tell you that, he'd have to look it up. Mercedes has so many models that repeat the objective of others it's crazy.

Lamborghini needs to lose weight, and Mercedes needs to work on their attention defficit, and take a few classes in smart prioritzing. Sounds just like the itinerary of a 50 year old executive.

And to make a correction, the Grand Sport Tourer doesn't look suspiciously like an Atlantic, but like a Chrysler Pacifica. So thats' basically what it is. It's strange how so many people are a sucker for a badge, since the faking is so obvious these days. " Sure, I'll pay 10 or 15 grand more for a Mercedes-Benz Pacifica ." What gives?

have you ever been in a pacifica, part sharing with mercedes is so very blatent, the instrument cluster is straight out of a C-Class, the HVAC looks eerily mercedeseque, even door handles, it made me wonder if they wouldn't share parts both ways on this. Mercedes is on a dangerous and slippery hill.

What strikes me as odd is the way critics complain mildly about such cars as the Crossfire being too much like Mercedes. They point out " flaws " such as a spongy pedal, or numb steering. All they do is compare things to Mercedes, which they loved when MB was on their own. They fail to recognize the Chrysler as it's own car, regardless of the platform sharing and such.

I have to wonder, if Mercedes were not involved, would the critics still be ragging on Chrysler for being too much of a Mercedes copycat? Hell no. No matter where MB quality is going, the new Chryslers are on their way to being a thoroughly improved line of vehicles.

I think a funny irony is going to come out of this whole thing. It began as a " merger of equals ", really like a German takeover, but will end in the long run as a renewed American brand with a German parent who's image has gone to pot.
