I have seen information (pg 31 of the US owners manual) that says the top can be lowered via the remote on the key. Does anybody have any information on this? My dealer can neither confirm or deny it.

Thanks

Since it's a standard feature, I would say that your dealer is a total dufus. " Can neither confirm nor deny it. " why doesn't he just admit he doesn't know anything  ? It's his job to know.

Well, I don't have experience with the E46 convertable myself, but I know the basic functions are Door lock/Unlock, Panic alarm, Power window, and Convertable top and trunk. Since this is the age of multi-function buttons, I would suggest you experiment with the window and trunk buttons. Try holding one down a little longer than usual, or press the button two or three destinct times.

Hope this works for you.

The book says hold down for an extra 2 seconds but this simply doesn't work. Does anyone have this working out there?

If you're doing exactly what the book says and nothing is happening, first make sure you're pressing the right button. And if still nothing, you should make a real issue of it with your dealer. Show him the manual, and the fob and let him try it.

You paid good money to have that car, and should not have fuss such things, have them replace it under warranty or something.

Have done that and they brought out their "senior" tech to speak with me. He informed me of some lawsuits in the past and that they hadn't done that since the mid 90's. Who knows.... I will have to kick them in the teeth a couple of time!

Please tell me who your dealer is so I can contact them. Do you think they know how to program the top to be controlled by the remote?

I don't know where you are Jcagle, I imagine you are in the U.S., but GIR is in the Netherlands. I'm sure you can find a good dealer in the U.S. Get away from the dealer you have now and you've already made progress. Good luck :) .

call BMW's north american opperations and ask to file a complaint on your dealer. I promise you, within a few days, they will be sending you flowers and planting their lips firmly on your ass.

Geschrieben

I'll call them this morning and tell that if they can't figure it out I'll just call BMW NA and get them to look into it. You're right, nobody likes it when a manufacturer is called!

Hallo jcagle,

schau doch mal hier zum Thema Zubehör für BMW (Anzeige)? Eventuell gibt es dort etwas Passendes.

Got an update from BMW North America. The top cannot be lowered by the remote. This is a misprint in the book. If anybody has a 2004 M3 Cabrio and this works let me know.

Geschrieben

i think if they had a misprint in the book, you could argue false representation and get something out of them.

Geschrieben

Not likely.... I didn't even know that was a feature when I bought the car.... if anyone has got this working let me know

If its an automatic roof (which I'm sure it is) then you could rig it up it you wanted. It all comes down to $$$

Thats the spirit Fox, thinking just like a bigshot $$$ attorney $$$. :D I must admit though, If I had an M3 convertible, I'd hop on that bandwagon.

It will be nearly impossible to get something out of such a huge company like BMW. They can simply find ways to get around you. You do need to do something about that dealer! He didn't know if the top goes down by remote?! That's insane. My dealer answers any little question I have perfectly. Plus, I have bought or leased 14 cars from him, and sent 3 friends over there to get their cars. So, obviously they love me and will solve any little problem I ever will have. It's great, they give me great deals and lots of free Audi and BMW jackets, hats, etc.

Well some car salesmen on the showroom floor, are just salesmen. They do become knowleded in the cars after a while, but the cars are not necessarily their passion.

I am strictly against having sales or marketing personel and thank god I didn't have the need for any up untill this day.

Most of the time they don't know what they're talking about and try to hide that with a nice packaging of BS and that's something we cannot afford in our line of work.

Our philosophy is: "You tell us exactly what you want and we'll make it for you". I'm affraid that if I were to send over some sales person to one of our customers we would become the laughing stock of the entire industry.

Instead of trying to make one sales I am for a long term profesional and personal relationship which in the long run is much more profitable. I think that's the problem with most dealers these days. They just try to sell you one car and after that it's over. They don't think about returning bussiness.

Isn't that the truth. I was at the BMW dealership on a Sunday a few years ago, and I was talking to this other guy about a Z3 we were checking out, telling him the features and good things about it. I'll bet I knew more about how to sell that car than the salesman did.

I think a love of cars is something a lot of dealers like to advertise that they have, particularly import dealers, but in reality, they might as well be selling insurance. A dealer who could neither confirm nor deny if the top retracted by remote, thats pretty bad.

Thats the great thing about being a car enthusiast, you can be your own salesman. When you go to the dealer, you know just what you want, and can dodge the crap.

I have a founded a little company with a few buddies of mine. We do just about everything when it comes to electronics or computing systems. Consulting, Testing, Prototyping, Engineering, Innovating... you name it we'll do it.

From small time projects like designing PCB's, or doing small things for Philips or other companies to bigtime longterm projects like DAF Diesel Engines (trucks), EMI Multiliners and Carbonpresses (machines to make CD's and DVD's). We are one of few companies/institutions who have a fully functional DVD line in house. Too bad we only have one father DVD which EMI donated to us, Kodak won't give us any.. :(

We also try to innovate new stuff and sell that to others. Like for instance within the upcoming year DVD Revision 11 will hit the market. With DVD11 it's possible to store 25GB of data per side, that's 4 times the amount of what's available today. And it's all credited to us. :)

The power of the company lies in the fact that we have alot of stuff in house. From NC/CNC machines, highpower microscopes, logic analysers, carbon ovens.. you name it we got it.

Geschrieben

wait wait wait, you mean to tell me that you actually get paid to layout PCBs? Wow, I did not know there was a market for that. I've got buddies who lay those things out for entertainment (their last one was about 4"X4", had 4 ATMega 128's on there, and a cirruslogic ethernet controller, the board's job was image transmission and motor control. He tossed that one out and is now designing some sick PGA system to do the job all on one chip now.

So I guess PCBs are free, since my buddy designs them for nothing, and he gets them manufactuered for free (we may or may not have created a non for profit company for that ends).

Huh, interesting.

Salesmen are sad. Really and truly they are. I hate going in to buy a car and having to correct the salesman on some detail or spec of the car, I just want to say "go away, you clearly of no help, i'll come find you if and when I'm ready to make an offer. The worst is when they go out for a test drive, and you figure out the controls to the car before they do. We had one good salesman I ever remember dealing with. When we bought our little suzuki SUV, the guy was just lassiez faire about the whole thing and just gave me accurate facts. I was impressed with him. The landrover guy was the biggest BS'er ever. All he wanted to do was drive us around the little test course to show us the offroading capacity. Maybe he doesn't understand we wanted to drive it before we bought it. He just rambled about "off-road technology this, land rover tradition that". I hated him. The porsche guy kept wanting to show us 911s, even after we had decided on the boxster. The jaguar people were obsequious, but nice.

I wish i could just test drive the car without some big talking head irratating me, in fact, I almost wish I could buy a car online without having to talk to any goonball salesman.

GIR, you've got the right idea man.

Geschrieben

Thats cool GIR, sounds like you've definately found a niche for yourself, well done. And where can i get my hands on one of those 25 gig DVDs? :)
