I didn't even know you could get the M3 in stick. Though it was SMG all the way.

nope, you can get it with a straight up Getrag Type D, shifted old fashion.

I'd say get it with the conventional manual, more exciting to drive, it is also much more flexible, allowing you to do things the SMG won't. The SMG is great, it shifts wickedly fast and has a downshifting program that is godly, but all track tests confirm the standard stick shifted manual to be faster (SMG does not allow clutch drops)

Save yourself the $2,400 and get the conventional manual tranny.

In some instances, the SMG could be only marginally faster to a point, and certainly not $2,400 faster. I would recomend the manual, the driving experience will be more pure and hands on, and it's not as though you will be F1 racing in the M3.

Transmissions like the SMG originated from systems developed for racecars with very cramped cockpits, but in a regular roadcar you could take it or leave it.

the SMG is there for people uncomfortable with conventional stick shifts, it is superior to an automatic, but not quite a true manual's level of performance.
