E36 M3 with SMG!!!???

Just a question about manosm3's M3 E36 how is it possible it has SMG gearbox.Was there SMG in 1997 Didn't BMW just make it Recently?

Yes, it was possible to order the SMG 1 gearbox for the old E36 M3.

Since it was possible to order SMG for the E36 50% were sold with the SMG. And today you can still order it for the E46 325i and 330i.

so let me get this straight r u guys saying that SMG has been around since '97 and is only now with the latest M3 being used...!?!? y wasn't it used B4?!?!? where does it come from ?!?!?

the E36 M3 had an SMGI gearbox as an option. The 'new' M3 has the SMGII. It's just a better sequential gearbox!

SMGI was very slow to shift, had some real issues with shifting at low speeds, and was relatively primative. SMGII is the most advanced transmission you can drive on the street, the electronics are a whole world better, it is the fastest, most adaptable, most convienient, and most well rounded transmission I know of.
