Who makes the best Sedan 12 cylender?

  1. 1. Who makes the best Sedan 12 cylender?

    • BMW 2004 6.0L (760Li) - technological tour de force - flat torque curve - 420+hp and 440+ft./lb. - and fuel economy of a midsize
    • Mercedes 2003 5.5L TT (S600) - twin turbos - quiet - muscular - 463hp - 575ft./lb.
    • VW Audi 2003 6.0L W12 (Phaeton, A8) - Bizarre Design, Quiet, Compact, 415hp, 398ft./lb torque.

Information has come out saying that BMW is planning on having gas guzzler tax on the 760. In fact, mileage is expected to be 17/24 (thanks much to GDI and a very tall upper gearing on the ZF), now, keep in mind that a Jaguar X-Type 3.0 gets 18/24 gas mileage - is 1,000 lighter and over 150hp less powerful, a 5 series gets 15/23 with a manual. The 760 is also going to have paddle shifted full manual control of the ZF 6 speed auto (as opposed to only partial control this year). HP output is expected to post over 420hp and over 440ft./lb. - and displacement is of course 6.0L. I am impressed at how fuel efficent this engine is. There is no car of similar size that can similar fuel numbers.

I like the Mercedes engines but i dont have so much experience of any new V12 engines. The old Mercedes V12 in a SL600 thats nice.

Geschrieben

Mercedes engines are definately behind Jaguar, Audi/VW, and BMW in terms of advanced technology, but they are very simple, rugged, and effective designs. The V12 is SL600 is very nice. The new turbo V12 at MB is a torquey beast. I can hardly wait till the new MB DOHC 4 valve motors debut - with VVT and VCT, they should be a step higher than their very impressive level right now. Too bad they have had to resort to forced aspiration. Some cars feel right with forced aspiration, I just don't feel a Benz is one of them.

I think the BMW engien are far more advanced then the other engines, but I don't know if that constitutes as better. The MB makes impressive numbers but with the use of turbos gives away some reliability compared to a N/A engine. The VW is a great design that also makes impressive numbers. I'm going to have to give the edge to BMW simply for fuel economy numbers and their proven reliability and impressive steps to continue to push engine technology forward.

No one makes an impressive of like BMW. They are as far as 30 years ahead of some companies in engine design (cough GM). Their Gas Direct injection allows them to push their engines 25% further (tack 25% onto the ouput of the CSL I6!). BMW is leaving room in their engines so as to be able to easily up their numbers later. Plus, BMW is conservative - they won't let out anything that is less than totally stable. Mercedes uses a fixed valve timing single cam layout - requiring them to supercharge to get the really great numbers (though their design is ideal for supercharging) - VW's 5 valve design was really designed around being turbocharging (therefor 3 intake valves) - Now if only we can lock up bangle in a closet - bimmer may just place themselves above everyone else - again.

Final Specs on 2003 760Li!

Curb Weight: 4,848 lbs.

Horsepower: 438 @ 6,000rpms

Torque: 448 ft./lbs. @ 4,400rpms

0-60: 5.4 seconds

These are final specs on the north american model from the factory.

Well - higher than expected output, it is amazingly smooth with all of the technology of 4.4L V8, but with the natural V12 balance.

With a 5.4 0-60, it is not much faster than the old 5.4L 750, but brings it to faster than a naturally aspirated S600, faster than a Phaeton W12, and even with an A8 6.0 W8. It is edged out by .6 seconds to 60 by the S600 Type 12 and S55 supercharged, and by .4 seconds to 60 by the 2004 XJR.

i heard that audi officials said the 2003 a8 w12 will have better performances than the s 600.

Geschrieben

Audi has flatly denied that a turbocharged W12 will go into an A8 (not enough market to justify development.) Limited to a naturally aspirated engine, i am interested to see how they can make a 4,300lb car 0-60 in less than 4.8 seconds (S600).

Geschrieben

The 760 was made for luxury not racing , true it has a powerful engine but you cant compare it with a twin turbo v-12 (S600) its not fare

when the M7 comes out then compare the (S600) will be completely demolished frpm a 550 + hp engine :D

Geschrieben

well, word is that no M7 is coming, instead a sports version is slated (like X-5 got a sports version instead of an M version).

Just the same, the 5.4 second 0-60 delivered by the fuel efficent V12 in 760 is only a scant .6 seconds slower than its twin turbo benz rival.

Hallo thepolarfoxqx,

schau doch mal hier zum Thema Zubehör für BMW (Anzeige)? Eventuell gibt es dort etwas Passendes.

Hey Fox I heard that an M7 actualy IS going to be made. Where did you hear that it won't be coming out? Cuz if it's true, damn!

And by the way not that it would mater anyway (because as far power is concerned, there's always going to an AMG, Brabus, Renntech, or Lorinser S-series that will have oodles of power (of course Lorinser, I admit,, would rather modify looks, than performance). But still, are you sure there won't be an M7? :-?

BMW Munchen new vehicle director Dr. Thiessen said in an interview with automobile magazine that there would be no M7 in the current plans, he was also the man who first leaked that M5 would be a V10.

are you talking about the classic B7 Turbo - or the new Alpina B7 Concept?

Geschrieben

Dang it. :x

Oh well, why not post this before I forget (it's a UFO that was captured by BMW in the 70's, and modified to look somewhat like a sedan):

i'd love to run into someone with that, it would throw them hundreds of feet with that hood.

Geschrieben

no, not yet I haven't, but I suspect it will be the car we have all waited for.

Geschrieben

The "new" Alpina B7? You mean the 2004 Turbo? I can't seem to find any pics of it. '

Also (Fox), yeah I'd love to see a car like that (the BMW pic I posted 4-messages-ago) in the streets. They'd be so pulled over in half-a-second! Heh! I don't understand the purpose of that car.

Geschrieben

it will probably look very much stock, maybe a new grille, some badges, and trim.

You think a viper would get you looks, imagine what the arrow hood would get ya!

Geschrieben

Oh right. Sorry, I refer to that freak of a hood as the "ugly hood". That and many other things I can't say here!

Geschrieben

that's right

you can't say them here.

Geschrieben

I know man I'm kidding, hehe! You know I wouldn't say anything offensive here. At the very least I try my hardest not to. I even edit my messages everytime the topic is updated with a new post, just to make sure everything with it was alright. But yeah that is one ugly-looking purposefully useless-looking work of bewildering art.
