Overlooked American Supercars

Anybody out there have any cars that are good but are somewhat overlooked. I personally have two such cars. I have a 1987 LTD-Crown Victoria LX and a 1995 Buick LeSabre Custom. Both are awsome cars that have been seriously overlooked. My LTD has more power than most Corvettes and tops out at 185 mph without the turbo muffler. My Buick has not yet been tested for top speed but has about 300 hp and can also beat out many cars. I have beaten several Mustangs, Camaros, Firebirds, and Corvettes at drag racing. Like I said I don't know the top speed. If you have some cool cars that are not on this website that you think should be, say your say.

Well, it is true that the engine placed in those cars (the LTD has a ford 302 - the Le Sabre has the 3800 Series 2) can make quite a few horsepower - actually a ton, your cars each weight approximately 2 tons, which is a lot for any engine to drag around. Dollar for Dollar, and with pickup for 6 people, no car beats a cranked up 95 Lesabre

I love the Buick turbocharged V6 stage 2. Seen dynos of over 1200rwhp in GN or T-type.

Those cars is fantastic in 1/4 mile racing. Like check this.

2 Kent Rudbeck from Muncie, IN 87 T-Type 7.850 176.16 1.170

Comments: Stage II 274 CI V-6 Twin Limit Engineering 70mm Turbo's Engine Mgt. by "FAST". Back halved to accomodate 16.5" x 33" MT Slicks Weight 3335 W/Driver

This is sick 7.850s in a 3335 car with V6.

Geschrieben

There is no doubt that the 3800 is the ideal muscle V6, in fact GM is debuting the next generation Buick Regal/Pontiac Gran Prix with a 280hp Supercharged 3800. The turbo is even better (there - you brought up turbos again). The buick GNX used a turbocharged 3800, and was the fastest US built production car for 4 years strait.

Speaking of Buicks has anyone ever seen this concept (it's called the BlackHawk)? It's V8 makes 463HP and 510lb-ft of Torque. It does 0-62.5MPH in 4.5 seconds, and has a maximum speed of 320KPH. Here are some pics:

its crazy, but if they built something like that, put the Vortec 8100 big block under the hood, i am sure quite a few people (maybe even me) would be in line to buy one.

Geschrieben

Yeah that's why I mentioned it. It's one of those crazy (and perhaps "retro" - somehow) looking cars that would be bought. I know I'd buy one. I think Buick should make more concepts like this. With a heritage like Buicks, I can think of many old designs that would be welcomed-back....

And speaking of the Vortec 8100, I think there's better engines you could replace this one with than the 8100 HP3. Besides would it make that much of a difference to have a 463HP 510lbs-ft engine under the hood than a 525HP 56olbs-ft one (or something like that?)? I guess it makes a bit of difference, but I don't think this car is about the performance, so much as it is about the down-right funky looks. Just my opinion. Wouldn't you buy this with the current engine? (I guess maybe it depends a bit on the price too....)

Geschrieben

the current motor is a "heritage-based" motor, which is powerful, but very old in basic principal. An 8100, when tuned up (volvo penta has naturally aspirated versions for marine use over 500hp) could be a very good, torquey motor. For a car like this, a big-block is a must. All things considdered, a retuned 8100 would probably do well. I like this style of making cars. Move out of the way beetle and PT Cruiser, this is the way real retro should be.

Geschrieben

I personally like ALL forms of retro! But how much does the engine that you mentioned cost? Or better yet, how much MORE does it cost (over the existing engine in this freakchild).

Geschrieben

the 8100 is right out of a GM 3/4 ton truck, tune it a bit, I think it would be cheaper than the retro V8 in there right now.

Hallo 95LeSabre,

schau doch mal hier zum Thema Zubehör für US Cars (Anzeige)? Eventuell gibt es dort etwas Passendes.

I don't think it's a retro V8. It's a V8 IN a retro. Besides don't you think tuning a more expensive engine is more costly that keeping that one? Besides if it was cheaper and made more power (or at least the same amount), or had a better HP/$ ratio, then you would think that Buick would do that.

Hey dont forget the freaken GRAN NATIONAL, every race trakck i go, all of then are running consistant 13s, and even going 12s , rare 11s, and a super GRAN NATIONAL that ran a 11 somthing at 12 somthing mph....wow wow.....really overlooked car.

Geschrieben

Was it not GRAND NATIONAL? Or was it just GRAN NATIONAL?

Gran National

Those things flew! Who said GM and turbos don't mix?

Geschrieben

Can't find anything on-line about a "Gran National".

Geschrieben

its a buick, check it ou....

But i was thinking...dude please dont forget the old school muscle cars...

My personal favorites are the SHelby CObra monster 427, and Shelby GT 500.....

:D

Geschrieben

I've heard about that now that you put a "Buick" in front of it. It has a familiar ring :"Buick Gran National".

The classis such as the Cobra will never be forgotten. do you like the old Mercury Cougars?

i like the old cougar, but the old gran national was king of the road

my overlooked american supercar of the week.

The cranked up ford Ranger.

yes, my freind jay has a 1991 ford ranger in great shape

and next week he is putting a ford 307 GT40 engine in there (a 302 bored with SVO GT40X racing heads, roller rockers, etc.)

Estimated horsepower 320-345. Torque to touch 400. Curb Weight - 3,100lbs

In a 1991 ford ranger.

Type "Buick GN" you should get better results. GN is such an awesome car, The very reason it was discontinued was simply becuase it outperformed GMs flagship car model the corvette.

There are some well known street driven and even Daily Driver GNs that run 1/4 in mid 8s..... Just think about this for a second. A mid 8 second street driven car. Simply amazing. Beat the car that was trailered in, thend drive home with it!

Its one car id consider one of my favorite Domestic cars, next to LS1 and LS6 powered rides.

Geschrieben

8 seconds huh? I kinda have trouble believing that. You realize to pull that off, you'd be moving nearly 150mph at the end of your quarter mile.

That is 0-150 in 8 seconds. The Veryon of 1001hp is projected to turn over mid 9s.

Buick GN is an amazing car, I have no doubts, the turbocharged engine was genious, and i wish they would bring something of the like back (instead of the supercharged 3.8GM uses now).

Geschrieben

Oh I understand your skepticism I had trouble believing it to, But luckily I was expecting, people to question this, thus I have provided a few sources to back up my claims. :)

Here is a page dedicated to Cal Hartline's 8 second street driven GN.

http://www.hartlineperformance.com/cal/index.htm

Here is a quote from someone at another board that also did his homework about fast GN.

Cal Hartline, 8.576@159.40 with a 1.300 60'. Over 900rwhp, maxed out the dyno's torque reading capabilities with 1200. 200k + miles, still has A/C, and is still street driven.

Brian Burnside, 8.680@158.40 with a 1.295 60'. Not as cool as Cal's (doesn't have A/C, etc).

Well perhaps now you will have an easier time believing in 8 second streetable GN! :):P

Geschrieben

alright, with 900 rwhp, i can see that now.

your definition of street drivable and mine differ.

but i'll give it to ya, that is impressive just the same.

If you didnt know guys there was also a Transam Pace Car version with almost the same turboengine. Seen one myself. And the engine in the Syclone and Thypoon also almost the same.

Geschrieben

the cyclone engine is amazing. I've seen one of those burning out once. it was incredible. That engine was sub 300 horse in there though. it must have been a job to get it to the point where it would wheely!

Geschrieben

Got a Syclone here thats all stock except engine and driveline i think. Still running 4wd and mid 10s on the strip. Would be a 9s runner with only rwd. But he´s running 10s with 4wd on the street=).
