Naw, a ferrari is too pure, no civicness could ever penetrate.

And If i had a ferrari, no one of thing would get within 5 feet of it (except me).

I pitty da fool who think a ricer and a racer are the same thing.

The reason the Ferrari V8s have that unique sound is because they are one of the few companies to use a flat-crank V8. If you take a Ferrari V8 crank out of it's block it appears much the same way a four cylinder crank does, except there is room enough for two rods per crank throw instead of one.

If you look at the Ferrari firing order it's the same as the Cosworth DFV, which both use the standard 1-3-4-2 on each bank, except interlaced. One bank takes it's turn, then the other bank takes it's turn except from the opposite end. They do this until it's time to repeat the firing order.

There are a few other cars that use a flat-crank with their 8 cylinder engines; there is the Lotus Esprit V8, the VW Passat W8, and the Cerbera AJP V8 (which we can't buy in the United States).

I know that one of the positive aspects of a flat-crank V8 is that they rev easily because they require less of a counterweight on the crankshaft throws (less rotational inertia). Another positive aspect of flat-crank vs dual-plane crank is that less counterweight means less weight of the crankcase, more counterweight in the crank requires a stronger crankcase. Additionally it sounds like a sports car ought to!

A negative aspect is that they vibrate at idle a little more than a dual-plane crank (pretty much all V8s we're used to: Mercedes, BMW, Chevy, Ford, Holden, etc). That's the reason VW uses balance shafts with their W8 - to quell the 2nd order vibrations inherent to flat-crank V8s. (I know VW uses a W design, but it's very similar to a V).

Anyway, it might be something to hear a Passat W8 with sports exhaust, as well as some videos of Lotus V8s and TVR Cerbera V8s!

PS - any similarities between a 4 cylinder Civic (or any other for that matter) and a Ferrari V8 is because the firing order is very similar.

PPS - firing orders:

CYL NUM Ferrari V8

1 2 3 4

8 7 6 5

FIRING ORDER Ferrari V8

1 - 5 - 3 - 7 - 4 - 8 - 2 - 6

CYL NUM Typical 4-cyl

1 2 3 4

FIRING ORDER Typical 4-cyl

1 3 4 2

(source: Ferrari Dino 308GT4 Workshop Manual, pps L13, L14)

(you can find the firing order for your 4 cylinder in your owners manual)

Ciao,

Tom

Ok, have you seen the F355 vs. Civic video? LISTEN! The Civic has a low sound, like a bear. The F355 screams. So its sounds are just totally different from eachother.

A couple of days ago I heard the f355 in real life. So i heard again that a f355 not sounds like a civic. A civic makes a deep noise (bad sound), but the F355 a high noise (cool sound).

I think it has more to do with the head layout than anything else. You could just look at the cars' specs and tell they sound nothing alike.

This is quite possibly the goofiest argument yet.

There's a hotshot guy who drives his F355 Spider down my street all the time. He hits the corner and rips down the street. My friend(not a car fanatic) thought there were 10 cars out there. It was just one. Nuf said

you know, the basic civic engine archetecture hasn't had a large change in a while. They all sound like an outboard engine. A ferrari sends chills up and down your back as it revs, driving one leaves you in a cold sweat. A civic sends pulsating pain through your head, and leaves you in need of advil.

only a wanker would suggest that a ferrari sounds like a Honda Civic. I suggest the author of that quote returns to his Datsun and faces reality.

In my opinion I think both have an excellent sound, but in my opinion the ignition of my Lambo, just destroys the sound of the f355 and the 360 as well.

Said this, I prefer the sound of the f360, its more roaring, its sounds as if screaming and in low revs as a muscle car, its perfect, BUT I PREFER MY CLASSIC GTO FOR EVER!!!!

By the way those anyone know the period time that it takes to have the f360 Challenge Stradale once its bought,(May be Changing it with the Porsche 4S.

don't forget

ferrari 355 : V8 engine with 379.8 bhp, 3.5 L with 5 valves/cylindre

Honda civic: don't have to mention that...do i?

Geschrieben

totally agreed.

A civic sounds like a 13k dollar car from japan made for point A-B driving.

look at the engineering - not a fast car.

A F355 is essentially a lux-ified, street legal race car, and built accordingly.

If you find their sound similar, you are deaf, stupid, or some ricer full of his pos car.

I never heard a F355, but I know for a fact that it doesn't sound like garbage (honda civic).

Geschrieben

It better sound good at 7 or 8,000 rpm. but does it really sound good at idle? Personally I have never heard a 355 at all, but from what I have heard from others it's pretty flat. I think everything about a Ferrari probably comes into it's own at about 7,000 rpm.

they sound nice at idle. Above say 3 or 4 is when they start to sound nice though

Like a Civic? No way! I hate the way 'new' Fezzas sound. Fezzas always used to have a gutsy rumble, but now they just sound like a strained vacuum cleaner! LM500 & Dino 246GT are the best. They still can't beat a Lambo V12, though.

Geschrieben

i've never been personally fond of the sound lambo's V12s have made, they were always lumpy, uneven, and barky. Nothing beats the butter smooth siren scream of the aston martin Vanquish V12, but i'd have to say the F550/F575 V12 has to be close, the smooth rumbling yell. The 5V F360 V8 sounds nice, just not V12 nice. A honda civic sounds like shit, there's no getting around that.
