Mongrel, where did you here that? If anything it would be a big upgrade for the SVT itself to have 500. Are you speaking Cobra R? Because the standard V8 Mustang will not have anything like that.

no for real, ask anyone, the new mustang gt (2005, i think) will have 500hp, and of course svt will tune it... i cant remember the site though i'll keep looking.

Well, the next Lightning is supposed to have around 500, so I suppose it's possible for that kind of power to land in the Mustang, but I highly doubt Ford would supply the Cobra with more bang than the GT sportscar.

There is no way the Mustang GT would ever have 500 standard horses though, it is supposed to be a high volume sports coupe with a real warranty and a retail of under 30k after all. This is what I have heard, which makes a little more sense. Mustang GT will have somewhere under 300 hp, from a new 5.0, and the Cobra could be raised to somewhere North of 400, like 420.

i agree. 500 is a bit much for that car. maybe the cobra, but even that i doubt. LNC is right in guesstimating 400-420.

i just did some reading on the mustang today, and its DEW98 based platform couldn't take that much power. 500 would be too much. The 2005 mustang will have 3 engines, the base, a 202hp SOHC 12V 4.0L V6 sourced from the ranger pickup is the base, a 3V/Cyl 4.6L V8 with VVT and Variable intake (much the same as the new 5.4L introduced for the F-150) will go into GT, making 300hp, and a supercharged 24V SOHC V8 is slated for the cobra, and is supposed to be rated to 440hp, and will be a little less bottom torquey than the current, instead gearing the boost to ramp linearly with revs. A new multilink rear suspension should also aid handling a lot. It will be 4 seats though, it wouldn't be a stang if it werent.

The new Mustang is based upon the same platform used in the Lincoln LS, Jag S-Type, and Thunderbird, but an " improved and strengthend " version, so it might be able to handle a pretty healthy dose of power in the future. The car will also remain live-rear axle to keep costs down and also for it's inherent rugedness. IRS will be reserved for high-performance variants such as the Cobra.

The four-wheel disc breaks will also be upgraded using a host of features like brake assist, electronic brake force distribution, traction control, and high speed stability control.

Expect the new Mustang to be a thoroughly modernized and refined machine, because thats' what it seems to be shaping up to be.

The mustang is an economical muscle car. There's no way the GT is goin to have 400hp.

supercars.net got confused, the FORD PRESS RELEASE says that the gt will have "healthy 300hp", and the cobra will have 400+.

You know that color-configurable instument cluster? It's about time. Thats' always been a feature I've incorporated into my own car ideas, and if I ever comissioned a Bentley, I would have that too.

The wheels on the GT look too skimpy, and the grill looks cheap, but the interior is nice. I see a LateNight and PolarFox analysis on the horizon.

The rear-mounted six-speed transaxle is identical to the high-performance unit in the Ford GT, with an integral limited-slip differential to drive the rear wheels. Based on the engine's 7,500-rpm redline and the drive ratios, this Ford Shelby Cobra concept has a theoretical top speed of more than 260 mph and would break 130 mph in third gear, although it's electronically limited to 100 mph - for now.

Whoop de doo, that car is krap. Do you really want to go 260 mph? Shelby needs to retire. That car hasn't a single ounce of the appeal the original had.

The spirit is there on that cobra, certainly will take a viper for a ride, but the excecution isn't there.
