it has almost 500hp!!! it was a whole 20 seconds from the start, he could easily acheived that, considering it does 0-60 in 5.2 stock he was probably running only around 4.7 to 60, which gives him around 15 seconds to get from 60 to 110. thats plenty of time

50 mph? what kind of crack are you smokin man??? and a top speed of 80? so you are saying that in 20 seconds that a modified lightning will only hit 80? not to mention the supra and viper who were behind it? you must be the one in the "dreamworld"

God you really don't get it do you? European trucks aren't allowed to go faster then 50mph, so they configure them to have more power then more speed. The thing can provide over 1000Nm of torque. The point here was (which you are again not getting) the amount of horse power is not related to the topspeed.

I never said the Lightning couldn't achieve 140mph, I just said that it would take the lightning sometime to get there.

And once again you are proving my point with that picture, because like I said from the start it will probably beat most car cause it has lots of low end power. But when they get upto speed then most cars will beat the lightning. A topspeed of 147mph isn't really something to be proud about, specially since the topspeed of a production car is 242mph.

I highly doubt that Guinness used that device to measure the topspeed of the lightning and I also highly doubt they used that picture in the book.

First off al the don't measure the speed like that, what they do is setup a runway with a pre detirmined length and have the car do 3 runs on it. THey measure the time it took for the car to make the runs and the best run is the best speed. When they know the distance the car traveled and the time it took the car then they know the average speed it had.

They don't use radar or ladar, so yeah it's a fake and you know it. So don't act all innocent.

when you compare a 550bhp volvo truck and a 550hp (just for comparing purposes) lightning, you are comparing apples with oranges. diesels are known for not having a ton of accelerating power (although ive seen low 11 sec cummins dodge and powerstroke fords) but have gobs of torque. it has to do with throttle response i spose. who cares about who will win at over a certain speed because i lightning is un-aerodynamic its a fast flying brick. lightning are killer in the 1/4. most people dont run top end, but a very few do, like Stan Martin. he runs 180 on the straits in auto-x events. he will also run circles around some of the porsches out there, which is hard for a 5k truck to do. my truck runs 11's and has mad acceleration, supras are fast and have great top end. so if they were to keep racing past 110 or so then it is possible that a viper and the supras could have passed him. but in a 1/4 the vid clearly show who would win in this particular event. big wheels dont save the lighting from having traction problems either, i can spin my tire at 50 or so with some good t-bars. whatever the case may be, the lightning won in the vid.

The point is that even though the trucks have 550bhp they can't go fast and they can't pull out fast. the amoutn of HP sais nothing about the performance. I thought some states had the same laws, 60mph or something. The point is that you can't drive safe when you're hauling 70tonnes of goods.

btw: pick-up trucks are allowed to go faster then 50mph.

@gavenb: I just made the comparison to prove a point, I know a pickup truck and a regular truck have nothing in common. Thank you for explaining my point. The Lightning might have lots of low end torque but if the track was longer the road cars would've beat the truck.

did it look like they were in europe? no, so why do you keep saying that that is where they are racing. and i dont think that they are racing to the speed limit (i think that is what you are talking about) i dont reallyget what you are saying because you keep contricting your self... and just cause your friends volvo cant hit more than 50 does that mean a lightning with the same hp will? they were built for different purposes, the volvo for hauling the lightning for hauling butt down the drag strip, and yes, when a Lightning (not talking about all the other trucks) has more hp it tends to go faster than it used too.

whoa now, no need for name calling. the lightning will be a better 1/4 miler than most, and i suppose you could take out the stock 3.73s and put in something higher for more top end too. but most cars are built around a certain focus ie 1/4 mile, auto-x handling, top end, etc. the lightning was built mostly (but not limited to) for 1/4 mile. asking something to exceed the limits of which it was designed is like asking an electrician to go plunge a toilet. he might get the job done but less satisfactory than someone else could do it. ive owned a lot of different cars but the lightning suits my tastes better than say a supra, not by any means saying the supra is a bad car (they are pretty cool imo) and yes the supras perform but tend to have more top end then accelerating power (generally) ive seen supras run mid twelves but at rediculous trap speeds. (tons higher than my truck) but my truck will net a better time at a lower trap. it all depends upon what the car was designed, modded, and built for.

It means that even though I went to great lengths to explain to you why the Lightning got away so fast and why the Supra's would've caught him if the track was a little bit longer, you still don't get it. My 14 year old niece (who needs a new liver btw, sign those donor cards damnit) gets it. And you also don't seem to get the difference between a pickup truck and a regular truck.

Mongrel, what you said legitmately doesn't make sense, GIR was right, the lightening is geared - and with its supercharger is tuned for low end power. It is a pickup - so that was a good decision on ford's part - because for aerodynamic reasons, a pickup will never be able to compete with a car in high speed performance. The Supra would have owned the lightening once its turbos got up to steady peak and its aerodynamical advantages started to take effect, that said it was beaten in that race.

And what you said about you can configure the lightening for top end isn't exactly true. You could swap the 3.73s for 3.55s or 3.27s, but that would do you little good, you'd only lose low end, and because the lightening is a truck, and has unbelievably bad aerodynamics, the taller gearing won't help it much up high, because aerodynamic drag increases exponentially with speed.

And mongrel, you say you know more about the lightening than anyone ever will? The lightening is just a 139 inch wheel based F-150 with the SOHC 16V 5.4L V8 with an eaton blower and shorter gearing right? I mean how is it that much different than an F-150? Lots of people know the F150 really well, and i think i understand pretty well what at eaton roots on top and 3.73s would do to an F-150's performance.

And GIR, merry christmas man. I think it's awsome you have a 14 year old niece who likes cars, and can understand that stuff, it's really cool she is that bright, and we need more chicks who like cars - and actually know stuff. I hope things work out for her - you've motivated me to fill out the card. A new year brings new hopes, oppurtunities and chances. Out of the darkness of winter the new year brings promise of better days, and I think those days will bring good things to your niece. She'll overcome this adversity and be all the stronger for it.

well aren't you sarcastic. rhyming poetry. I don't know. I know people who have cars i don't have, and to be honest, i know more about it than them. I have corrected car dealers before, they told me i was wrong, i made them look it up, and they ate crow. That's pretty normal for enthusiasts, just because someone owns a car doesn't make them the guru of it.

And since i'm back from my crappy vacation and it is a new year, i can be as unpleasant as i want
