Autobild on the E60 M5

Apparently Autobild (a huge german car magazine) is running a piece on the new M5 in this months issue. This is what they are saying:

40 Valve V10 pushing out 500 hp and developing 550 Nm of torque and it's redline in 8k5 rpm.

19" wheels with dynamic drive standard on all M5.

SMGIII with 6 gears not 7

0-100 km/h in 4.5 sec

What's even more amazing is that Autobild is trying to start a rumour about a possible M5 CSL. Wether they'll do a CSL variant of the M5? I don't know! But if they do they won't call is CSL, maybe SL but not CSL.

I'm trying to get scans of this months issue, I'll post them asap.

4.5.......i realy hope thats not true.i thought it would be much faster.

that would be dissapointing.

that's just their estimate, seeing as no one outside the dark halls of BMW has driven one.

We'll have to wait and see, and hold out as much hope as we can.

Okay, a little rough mathematics here.

Assuming the old 540i six-speed weighs in at about 3,750 lbs.

And the M5 weighs in at a bit over 4,000 lbs.

540i has 282 hp. - 0-60 in 5.5

and the M5 has 394 hp. - 0-60 in 4.8.

Thats' 112 hp. more than the standard model and it shoots to 60 .7 seconds faster - with a 112 hp. advantage. Remember just rough calculations here.

Now lets say the new M5 does have just 500 hp. Thats still 175 hp. over the standard 545i. So disregarding weight, torque or possible gear differences, if the 112 hp performance increase of the old M5 over the 540i is anything to go by. Then with a 175 hp. increase over the standard 325 hp., the new M5 should hit 60 miles per hour about 1 second faster than a 545i. That would be about 4.3 - 4.5 seconds.

So 4.5 to 60 for the new M5 sounds about right. But I should certainly hope it is faster than that, with all the car's advances working together

I hope so to, I just wan't the M5

to beat every thing in its class

Not only everything in it's class, but everything in E-Class too :D .

hell yes.

if Steve Dinan could get the 5.0L V8 M5 E39 to 0-60 in 4.1, remembering now even after he was done with it, it was 30-80hp less than E60 M5 and 200lbs heavier, I think MPower can do sub 4.

official figure says that previous m5 hit 100kmh in 5.3 s...so it's quite good leap.

Hallo GIR,

schau doch mal hier zum Thema Zubehör für BMW M (Anzeige)? Eventuell gibt es dort etwas Passendes.

the official figure from BMW of North America is that E39 M5 ran to 60mph in 4.8 secconds, and it has been tested faster.

The more important thing i'd like to bring up.

Steve Dinan tuned an E39 M5 to wind higher, pulled some weight off, and cranked more power out of it, he calls it the DInan S2-M5, and it makes 470hp from the 4.9L V8 and weighs in just short of 3980lbs, and it runs to sixty in a tested 4.1 secconds. I don't imagine a lighter and more powerful E60 M5 will be slower. Keep in mind now, a 4,000lb automatic transmissioned 476hp E55 does it in 4.3, i'm thinking a lighter M5 with between 25 and 75 more horsepower and 200-400lbs less to tow will be able to top that.

All of the american mags are projecting a 0-60 of between 3.8 and 4.0

I'm just hoping BMW keeps a lid on the weight, thats' a very important factor they need to focus more attention on.

545i weighed in at 3,850, best in class so far as i know, and the new M5 will be even more weight intensive (as it has a magnesium block and such), so i'm hoping to see about 3,700lbs.

official european figure for e55 amg's 0-100kmh acceleration is 4.7 s...those 4kmh are obviously making the difference.
