Well, this is a step ahead not only for general motors and its luxury car division, but also for the american supercar market. the cien increases cadillac's cometitivity greatly and will push european car makers farther as they see that america is finally coming uo with good cars. the cien's 750 hp 12 cylinder seems to be a masterpice as it has all the technological features germans or italians know about and some of them they don't

Like they say...you can't beat American engineering. They also say that Buick makes the best V-6's and V-8's and Cadillac makes the best V-8's and V-12's. Can't beat either of them.

Ok, the V12 is slated never to be put into production. Non the less it is an amazing piece of machinery - no doubt the most advanced engine in the US. Did you hear, Cadillac is producing a V16 (yes sixteen cylenders) to compete against maybach, rolls royce, and bentley. It is slated to have 9.2Litres of displacement, output well over 600 horsepower (700 is a reasonable figure) - why spend the money on development you migh say? The V16 is two northstar v8's fused together - like the aston martin V12 is two ford v6s fused together. Also, it will be body on frame archetecture, and utilize the Delphi 4 wheel steering introduced on the GMC Sierra Denali truck, making the super caddy the most agile car of its size (which is about 20 feet long). Caddy makes a comback! The northstar is already as advanced as any engine of its time built anywhere in the world. The V16 will also use cylender de-activation - so it can run on eight cylenders when 16 are not needed. One question though - why does the CTS use the Opel 3.2L 54 degree V6 - it is clearly inferior to the 3.5L 90 degree Northstar V6 - the engine bay is big enough, it would be using family technology, make more horsepower, be smoother, and allow the CTS to better compete with its competitors (which are all faster). The platform is going to base the new STS as well - perhaps the "Shortstar" will get into CTS.

Also - CTSi is coming for 2004 - a 350hp 5.7L LS1 powered CTS

It actually makes 750HP. But then again now it's probably been killed thanx to the Sixteen. I was hoping they'd build the Cien. Man that's an edgy/classic-looking/edgy car.

well, the engine based on the one in the cien, though grossly detuned (to no better than 600, though better than 450) for use in a next generation Seville and Escalade. It is a great platform, much more modern and long term than the stuff in the sixteen.

I think the engine is too good to not appear in realistic future production Cadillacs (although as you mentioned it will be tuned-down disgustingly, primarily for cost-management). But I think the stuff in the Sixteen will be long term as well. Besides the car IS slated to appear in 2006/2007+, so the technology is definitely not just for show.

sure, and the next generation corvette V8 will be based on the V16 for the sixteen. this will be the first application. Also, the 16/8/4 cylender deactivation, which so far is only being implemented in the pushrod v8s. The V12 i think to be the superior powerplant, and can only imagine what this could do in a corvette frame.
