=(, I'm too ashamed to say.

Here is a hint:

It is probably 10 times slower than the fastest you have driven in, =).

It is a 78 Camaro. It was very heavy, and although it was a sports car, it is not very fast.

. The fastest I ever went in a car is 121 (i think) in the old man's jag X 3.0.

My current ride takes the honors: 1993 BMW M5. The car has a normally aspirated 3.8l inline six (S38) engine which makes 347hp ... enough to easily push the car to the far side of 170mph*. Fortunately, the ///M suspension and brakes are up to the task as well.

The fastest I've driven the M5 was an OBC-verified 165 mph, on a Sunday morning on the Fulda-Frankfurt autobahn. I've actually done this two or three times, but in each instance I ran out of road before I could get nudge the 7200 redline. Still, 130-140mph over here (traffic permitting) is pretty routine, so I guess the question of speed becomes relative after a while. Another driver I took a course with at the Nuerburgring said it best: "It's not how fast you drive -- it's how you drive fast."

* In stock configuration, the M5 is electronically limited to 155mph.

The latest BMW 745i, MB CLK 430 avantgarde and a 2000 porsche carrera 2 cabrio. Didn't go fast, but they are the fastest cars i've driven.

Having fun going fast doesn't dictate going 170mph, though it doesn't hurt. As red-neck southern hick as this may sound, I have had a blast offroading never exceding 40mph, often i don't exceed 25, but the sliding all over the place, slinging dirt, mud, and gravel, and spining all four wheels never stops putting a smile on my face. Doesn't require a very special car either. At 20K, my XL7 has no trouble getting me around town, hauling loads, and I have never gotten stuck in it yet offroading. That said, nothing beats the thrill of the race track. I am not sure how it works over in europe, but here in the states, race tracks have "track days" where you can take your car out and race on the track. It is the most fun you can possibly have in a car (except for maybe some sort car-chase) .

I'm inclined to agree. For me, speed is only a part of the equation. For instance, I've had a lot more fun negotiating the Nuerburgring at 90 mph, than I have ever running all-out on the autobahn in the >150 mph range. The former offers a true test of my driving abilities, while the latter only tends to make me nervous. Anybody can go fast, given the right equipment, but not everybody has mastered the finer points of car control. Just because some novice may have "gotten away with" going a ridiculously high rate of speed doesn't mean that he/she really has any idea what they are doing -- and I would much rather be good than lucky. :)

Well, for me - the driving eqasion has always been this speed+handling+race track = fun. You are truly fortunate to have gotten to drive the track at Nuerburgring.. Everyone's idea of fun in a car is different. Some people like the idea of foot to the floor 150+mph cruising, others like sliding their tail around every corner and doing burnouts at every light, but I personally like the feeling of zipping around the race-track, pinned to the lateral supports of my seat, feeling the tires fight for every ounce of traction, negotiating turns, and trying to escape four wheel drift (perhaps trying to figure out how to stay out of it). Speed is one factor in fun driving - it is important - but not exclusive. I wish american automakers understood that.

Just recently drove a Lamborghini Murcielago - I'm sure you all know the stats.

The car was rather a disappointment.

Geschrieben

i am aware of the stats of on murcielago - they paint it to be a blast to drive, but I was afraid when they canned diablo - that some of what made diablo fun to drive would die too. In what ways did it dissapoint you?

RE- Lamborghini Murcielago - here is copy of what I have posted elsewhere:

Well here the driving impressions guys:

Getting into the car is joke - headbutting the scissor door is NOT - PERIOD.

The interior is lame - maybe its Audi - maybe it's just plain dull/crap/boring- ESPECIALLY up against the 575/550 which is the best interior of any car in the world.

Styling - the Diablo is a much much cooler car to look at and sit in than the Murcielago. If you're going to build a wild car then don't compromise. The rear end of this car looks unresolved and just not satisfying and I get more looks from passers-by in a F355 than I do in this - Looks better than in pictures - but still no match for the delicate presence and CLASS of any modern Ferrari. For the poseurs - a 360 turns more heads. The only colour to get this car in is black IMO.

Driving the car is EASY and I mean - VERY easy - almost to a fault. The gearchange is less like a gearchange and more like a satisfaction-less switch. The clutch is sooo overassisted that you cannot feel the point of engagement and a Volvo sedans is heavier - annoyingly light.

You still can't see much in the car. Nothing at all about the front end bonnet and nothing much from the rear view mirror although the side mirrors work fine.

The car shrinks around you A LOT - the width is not an issue such is the ease with which the car can be driven....

Power - only felt as fast as a 550M - the extra on-paper grunt accounted for NOTHING from the drivers seat - no big deal. Well weighted brakes - nice steering - but a VERY laggy (electronically controlled) throttle which made it impossible to pull away without over revving - (I stalled it 3 times trying to be delicate). The instrument binnacle wasn't working when the demonstrator was out, making life harder still.

Cannot comment on cornering ability - no chance to judge. Others there with me said it may still be subject to lift off oversteer like old Lambos.

Add to this a salesman that was sufficiently arrogant to question my integrity when I couldn't fly-off the fly-off handbrake........ He had been very helpful up to this point but then turned nasty.

I only just controlled myself.

I'm no journalist but if I want a Lamborghini I'll get a Diablo 6.0 or a GT. More importantly I've realised I'm a Ferrari man through and through. I'm not old so the 575M is not a "mature" choice - it's simply the best production car in the world at the moment and that's that. The Ferrari 575M is vastly superior - you sit like a man in it, not a dog - it's sweeter - and as Jammy put it, the Ferraris are SUBLIME, beautiful, classy, - not wild - the 575M is the last word in CARS - not spaceships.

Offered a 360 vs Murcielago - I'd still take the V8 Ferrari.

For the benefit of those reading, these are just my opinions and not of anyone else that was present with me.

Cheers Manu

Thanks, it is always nice to get a real objective driver's remarks on a car. Great pain was taken to make the shifter feel like that, we are talking double cones all but 5th and 6th, i haven't looked over the revised diagram of the tranny, but I have heard word of tripple cone first and second. No suprise the shift is lighter than a volvo. It is too bad that the excitement isn't there, I can' help but blame VW. I am not much of a front engine ferrari fan, but I feel safe in saying that 575 gained much in its revision, Lambo may have lost a little. That should even the tables a bit. When Ferrari 420 Modena (like a 360 + .6L) I think that just may outrun Murci.

the fastes car I ever drove was the Ferrari Enzo :P, my cousin works at the factory and the had me test drive it, they had not electronicall limited it to 180 mph yet even though they say the speed is 215mph. Anyway, when I drove it I floored it too hard and the car shot like a bullet to 245 mph and when I turned this little toy spun at 220 mph into a wall. I was in the hospital for 8 months because the car is weaker than a Corvette. It must be plastic the Enzo. They should but traction control on that thing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:D:):(:o:-? 8) :x :P:oops::cry:

I live in Mexico, here you can drive as fast as you can. There is a highway that goes from mexico city to acapulco. Here is where mexicans test their cars. I stole my uncle Audi A8 4.2 L quatro (300 hp)to go to acapulco. On the road i reached 260 km/hr ( here in mexico those type of cars are not electronically limited). The car felt excellent, the direction was precise; the only thing i felt more or less were the brakes, they heated very fast so the pedal height varied a lot.

unlike europe where there are cameras everywhere, in north america, if you go far away from the city (especially late at night) - you are limited only by the car. Cars here are unfortunteately electronically limited. I maxed my Suzuki XL-7 (it has no electronic limit) at just shy of 120mph - and there were 3 other people plus a lot of gear in the car with me. I suppose there may have been a few more mph left in it, but being that that is an SUV, that was as fast as I would ever dare go. The steering lost precision. When I hit the brakes, the petal was very very unstable, and there may have been some ABS interfearance, I am sure I heated the heck out of them (the rear brakes on that car are drums) because I went from 120-55 in a little over 15 seconds. Fortuneately I could cruise a while and let the brakes cool (because at 55 there wasn't much left). I am sure my Jaguar X-Type would break into the 150s if not for electronics, but somewhere mid-low 120s (i am sure the exact number, I only know where the speedo stops) the electronics say "no more". Some pick-up trucks and suvs here have electronic limits as low as 95mph, and most cars are limited to no more than 115.

I always like to max my cars out so

My current B10 can do 163mph and I know that for a fact

The fastest road car I have driven (acceleration-wise) was a Evo VII Tomi Makenan - which did 60mph in 4.2secs and 100 in 10.2secs.

I had a ride in a Renault 5 GT turbo with 285bhp - that was the madest car as it felt like its was made of tin foil - it gave me a headache as it was sooo brutal. It had huge brakes that enhanced the headache too. :o

The fastest car I have been in fullstop was a Radical SR3 around donnington race track ( this thing beat the Pagini Zonda by 4secs around the TopGear test track). :D

I also went in a Caterham R500 and Noble M12 (lovely balanced car) the same day.

Fastest I've ever driven in a BMW 518-Bavaria: 113MPH (~182KPH).

Fastest I've ever driven in a Toyota Camry: 125MPH (~201KPH).

Fastest I've ever driven in a Hillman Avenger: 75MPH (~121KPH).

The BMW: ~100HP(?)

The Toyota: ~130HP(?)

The Hillman: ~60-70HP(?)

Basically all these cars have been taken to their limit, and back. My personal favorite's:

1- BMW (pretty obvious, it's a Bimmer)

2- Hillman (just a classic car, I loved it)

3- Camry (good engine compared to the above two, but eventhough it's much newer, it still feels and looks very dull and boring, and uncomfortably unstable)

There you go.

Next up:

The Sirius! :D (LOL; yeah right!).

I was recently trying out my volvo before I modify it, it is a 115hp 740, 180,000 miles on it, and I was doing 117mph with it, it was shaking just a bit. Maybe that is the really old shocks, but it was certainly more fun than 130 in the jaguar, which seems effortless. My suzuki XL-7, good for 195hp after a K&N intake does 125 (about) - which is very scary in a somewhat tall sports utility vehicle.

Next Up:

The Land Rover (7ft tall).

I forgot to mention, I've also been in an old Peugeot and an old Buick (though I didn't get to drive them - I was waaaaay under-age). The Buick did 107MPH (~172KPH) max., while the peugeot did about 100MPH (~161KPH) max., and both were cool cars.

And to suport something you said on another post, Fox, yes the old Peugeot did have a few break-downs and problems in the short trip we took in it (but it had already done a lot of work prior to that).

Oh, and in comparison to the 180,000 miles on your Volvo, my Camry has 315,000 miles on it! But it's not bad, 'cuz it still does the job and does it well enough (though it does occasioally fail the old "emmission inspection" or whatever it's called.

Hey Saman, what's are the stats on your Peugeot?

250 kp/h on my S500 (2001). The speed-o-meter was somewhere around 260 but I'm sure it's 250 because of the limit.
