Ferrari SpA VIN Equipment Codes

Many Ferrari owners are interested in deciphering the 17-digit Vehicle Identification Number that is inscribed on their Ferrari. The information from this FAQ is based on an article on the subject written by Lloyd W. Shaw.

The Federal Motor Vehicle Theft Law Enforcement Act of 1984 became law on October 25, 1984. The standard applies to both major parts and all motor vehicles produced during the 1987 model year and all sequential models produced thereafter.

The 17-digit Vehicle Identification Number must be inscribed on the engine, transmission, both front fenders, hood, both doors, both bumpers, both rear quarter panels and the decklid or hatchback (whichever is present). The VIN taken from the stated locations shall provide a true description of the vehicle to which it is assigned.

All Ferrari models have the VIN embossed on a metal plate affixed to the top of steering column. An example of a Ferrari VIN is shown below, and the subsequent information and chart explains how to decode the label. The chart covers VINs starting in 1983.

Z F F X D 2 1 A 9 G 0 0 3 8 0 9 9

1st digit = country of origin

The first digit identifies the vehicle's country of origin. Italy's letter is "Z," therefore, all Ferrari VINs will begin with the letter "Z".

Z = Italy

2nd + 3rd digit = marque / manufacturer

The second and third digits identify the marque and manufacturer. To date, Ferrari SpA has been assigned and used only two codes

DF = the Dino

FF = the Ferrari marques manufactured by Ferrari SpA.

The Dino marque has not been produced since 1980, therefore "FF" will appear in the second and third place digits of all Ferrari VINs, unless you are looking at a Dino.

4th digit = Engine

With only 26 letters available, it was necessary to recycle some of the letters. Always consider the entire 17 digit VIN to determine the type of engine, especially the sixth and seventh digits

A = 308 2-valve injected (U.S.A.model)

9th digit = check digit (used by law enforcement agencies)

The ninth digit is a check digit used by law enforcement agencies to ensure that the VIN is valid. By using a very complicated formula involving the entire VIN, a law enforcement officer can determine if the VIN is correct for the vehicle being checked. Occasionally a letter, rather than a number, will appear in this space, but it will usually be a number between 1 and 9. In some cases, this number will be a zero on vehicles that were built for markets outside of the United States.

10th digit = Is used to designate the year model for vehicles produced for the U.S. market.

A = 1980

B = 1981

C = 1982

D = 1983

L = 1990

M = 1991

N = 1992

O = NOT USED

P = 1993

Q = NOT USED

R = 1994

S = 1995

T = 1996

11th digit = assembly plant

The eleventh digit is used to designate the company's plant location where the vehicle was produced. This digit should always be zero, since all Ferraris are produced in Maranello, Italy.

0 = Maranello, Italy

12th --> 17th digit = production number

The twelfth through seventeenth digits are production numbers in sequential order. This number should allow you to determine when the vehicle was produced in the production run.

When purchasing a used, Ferrari one should carefully compare the VIN against the different vehicle compoments.

If the VIN indicates that the vehicle should have a fuel injected 4-valve motor, while in fact it has a carbureted 2-valve motor, you can safely assume that the motor has been changed out in this vehicle. This would adversely affect the overall value of the vehicle and your future investment.

It is very important that the VIN is correctly shown on all documents, (registration title, insurance papers, etc.) concerning your vehicle.

The data on this page was obtained in part from the 59th annual edition of the National Automobile Theft Bureau handbook for Law Enforcement and an article which appeared in the Ferrari Market Letter.

Bei der VIN gibt´s immer wieder Probleme mit der richtigen Zuordnung:

(Ferrari-Chat)

How many digits shoud the vin number of a 1978 ferrari 308 GTS have. I know that in 1980 the us cars required to have 17 digits. I only found to have 11 digits with mine. Does that sound right..

17 digits isn't enough, The early '80s Euro 17 digit VINS had a series of zeros in the fields that the US used for model year and a check digit.

This causes problems. Since an 'O' is the US code for the 1984 model year, most Euros end up getting registered as '84s even tho they may have been built much earlier.

I was lucky, when I bought my car I was able to get a FAX from FNA stating that my car was built in October '82. MA still insisted in registering it as an '83 model year car tho.

The dealer wouldn't push the issue since the emissioins test cut-off is 83 & earlier & if it had been a US make it would have been an '83.

Everytime I give someone my VIN & they type it into a computer I start grinning. Sure enough it's gonna get rejected. Then they tell me my VIN is wrong, it's failing the check & the model year is '84, not '83.....

My 78 GTS is F106AS*23825* Build date on car March 1978 - Heritage Certificate date 01/03/78 1, March, 1978

When I bought the car the title had just the chassis number 23835. When I went to register it in MS the state said that that number had already been used and they could issue me a number and a new serial plate to attach to the car with STC23825 STC= State Tax Commision. I did a little research and found the stamped number on the frame rail on the right rear in the engine compartment with the full VIN. That is what we used to register the car.

The 17 digit VINs started in 1980. I tried to Carfax mine and found out that you can't Carfax pre 1980 cars because they don't have the long VIN.

Hier eine aktuelle Übersicht der VIN-Identifikation entliehen von der Ferrari Seite von Edvar van Daalen www.red-headed.com :

VIN: VEHICLE IDENTIFICATION NUMBER

Since 1980, all Ferraris are equiped with a VIN, a uniform 17-digit Vehicle Identification Number. It was first introduced on US models, as it was required for all cars in the US made after January 1st 1980. Other markets soon followed.*

The VIN can be found in several places, but on all models (except the Enzo Ferrari) it can be found on a plate on top of the steering column. Depending on the model and the market, the VIN can also be found stamped on a plate or in the chassis in the engine room, or on plates in the doors.

The overview published on this page explains each digit of the VIN. It was made with help from Gerald Roush (Ferrari Market Letter) and other Ferrari-spotters. Certain information is from official documents, but not everything. So, please note that this overview may contain errors and that it isn't complete. Corrections and additions will always be appreciated.

The check digit of the VIN appears in the 9th position of US versions and provides a way to verify the validity of all of the other characters in positions 1-8 and 10-17. The check digit is calculated by carrying out the following mathematical computation.

(1) Assign to each number in the VIN its actual mathematical value and assign to each letter the value specified in following Table:*

A = 1 G = 7 N = 5 V = 5

B = 2 H = 8 P = 7 W = 6

C = 3 J = 1 R = 9 X = 7

D = 4 K = 2 S = 2 Y = 8

E = 5 L = 3 T = 3 Z = 9

F = 6 M = 4 U = 4

(2) Multiply the assigned value for each VIN character in the VIN by the Position weight factor specified in the following Table:*

VIN position Weight factor VIN position Weight factor

1st 8 10th 9

2nd 7 11th 8

3rd 6 12th 7

4th 5 13th 6

5th 4 14th 5

6th 3 15th 4

7th 2 16th 3

8th 10 17th 2

9th to be calculated

(3) Add the resulting products and divide this total by 11.

(4) The numerical remainder is the check digit. If the remainder is 10 the letter 'X' shall be used to designate the check digit. The correct numeric remainder, zero through nine (0-9) or the letter 'X' shall appear in the VIN position nine.

      Hallo,
