Worried for BMW's Future

I am the owner of 2 BMW's (330ci and x5 4.4) and have been glancing through the latest offerings from both the BMW and the MERCEDES camps.

To be honest, I am appalled at the new 5 series which looks like a (no disrespect) Toyota in disguise, and as for the z4 - it's simply an ugly novelty car.

I don't know if any of you have seen the new next gen mercedes, but they outclass and outshine any of the new breed BMW's. The trademark 'tough, elegant and ultimately sexy' exteriors are being replaced with shabby Japanese-esque looking tin can design.

What the heck is going on? :roll:

Just wait a while and give BMW time to sort out the mess Chris Bangle made. The 2004 7 series looks much better, hopefully they will do the same with the new 5 series.

The Z4 isn't really a car for men, it's more a car for the misses. Women seem to like the car the way it is.

Have you seen the new X3 and X5 at the IAA? They look much and much better.

And as far as BMW tech goes. They still continue to amaze people with new engines and new tech that raise the bar a little everytime.

Like I said just give them time and they will sort out the mess.

But yes, I have seen both the new X3 and come to think of it the 6 series. The X3 is not so impressive to look at and the 6 series looks like that old NISSAN ZX (can't remember the exact lettering)...

The X5 is only getting a minor headlight upgrade, and the 7 series - barely looks any different either. I remember looking at the 5 a few months back in the showroom and thinking 'is that a BMW'? I have been reading about this Bangle guy, and he seems to be responsible for the new looks... Again, I ask, what the heck is going on?? THIS IS NOT BMW DESIGN....SPORT AND ELEGANCE :roll:

I can see where you're coming from and I was worried myself for a whil e aswell but I am convinced that BMW is working towards correct mistakes made in the past.

As you can see there are just subtle changes here and there but the overall looks much better then what mr. Bangle did.

I disagree with you on the new 6 series. Yes it has a huge rear but overall it looks great and it brings much potential for the M6. Check out these pictures of the 6 series:

The X3 and X5 look much better then what Bangle did on the first X5. Again like you said subtle changes here and there but the overall looks much better.

The problem with Bangles designs is that there's too much slack here and there. There are curves or lines on the car that are just wrong. Like you can see on the 7 series and the X5 if you smooth out the lines and make a few subtle changes here and there (like the headlight) then the overall design becomes much more agressive and better looking.

I believe if BMW is going to redo the cars they should start with the headlights because all the headlights Bangle did look like crap.

GIR, excellent photos thanks; yes, you are right that 7 looks FAR BETTER than the original. A lot more more menacing and tasty looking from the front.... I never had any complaints about the back anyways...

I presume those 'pin eyes' are just a mask and not part of the final production??!! (sorry am new to the spycar scene )

Oh, and I don't suppose you would know if I could put those new X5 4.8 lamps on my 2003 4.4 model - or is it an actual body design change?? They look very nice nonetheless...

there isn't going to be a 4.8is model (it was cancelled), but the lamps used on it are going to show up on all X5's for 2004, all i can tell says they should pretty well to bolt into yours, but if they don't, wait a few months, and someone like Turner Motorsports or Bavarian Autoworks will have the new style available for the 2003 and earlier models for sale.

Thanks for the info Polar... So hang on: is the 4.8 definitely cancelled or is that a rumour? I read somewhere that they are deleting the 4.6 and upgrading the 4.4 engines to give them quite a nice bit more power...Any clues??

the X5 4.4i has this year gotten a 315hp torqued up version of the Valvetronic 4.4L used in 745 and 545, which has made it quicker, it looks strongly as though 4.8is is not going to happen, it is possible it will come back in a later year? at the moment, there is not 4.6is or 4.8is for the 2004 model year, so maybe 2005?

OMG!!!!The 6 series is beutiful.I dont see how anyone can not think so.

That alpina 7 is amazing to.i think the 6 is realy nice i think bangle did a great job on that one.

i know the 6 series is the ebst lookin coupe since the 8 series. I gues bangle made soo many errors it made the car look good

If you mean the glowing " angel eyes " lamps, they will probably make production. I don't know for sure if they would adapt to your X5, but you might be able to heist a set from the last 5-Series, ( 2001 and up ) and find out.

Is it just me, or does the profile of the 6-Series look like a stretched 3-Series coupe? Perhaps that is why it's not flat out bad looking.

the 6 series is a lot flatter though. i think it looks nothing like the 3 series in anyway except for the bmw emblem on the front and back. why did bmw make the damn back window immobile. that is so stupid. that why i didnt buy an m3. i like that back window going down like in the 8 series. what a shame.

I've been looking at pictures of the X5 shown at the IAA and pictures of the current X5. I think that you will need to change the frontbumper aswell but there is a possibility they fit into the current X5.

If you want the new headlights you want the new front bumper aswell so I don't see a problem there.

Slap on the small steps on the sides and you got yourself the new X5

turner motorsports and bekker imports both carry angel eye conversions for the pre '04 E53 X5's. They run about 600 USD.

Hi Latenight....Actually the pin eyes are refering to the new 7 series photo LINKS.... They show a new headlamp with some small black pin-eyes... I presume this just a mask to hide the design...

Great GIR, Polarfox stated that the new headlights run in at around $600...I don't suppose you have a ball park estimate of how much a new bumper costs? Oh, and that silver step is already on my car, I put the step plus a titanium rim (dark grey metal) around all the side windows plus added the 4.6 rims - which perfectly contrasts the black paint...

Special headlights always seem to cost about $600. They aren't hard to find, but if you want to save money, you should get some from a 5-Series, and forget about it if you have to change the bumper.

no, there is a a kit that will keep your headlight you have on your 4.4i, but will modify them to look like the new ones, it is an angel eye insert, and is a pretty easy job, and looks very nice. Headlights are always expensive, especially on newer BMWs.

I share your concern. BMW DOES seem to be going in the wrong direction in terms of design. It seems to be getting more truck-like. I'd have to say the only new BMW that melts my heart, is the E63 (6-Series).

As for the new 5-series..... I'd still go for the E39....

the six series seems almost the most extreme of bangle's designs, I will wait to hold judgement to see his new 3-series, the 5 series is dissapointing, the Z4 holds some presence in person, and the 7 has grown on me in time.

I just saw a 6 series today, at a car show in Denmark, right next to a 7 and a 5 series. Near by stood a Z4 and the X3 and X5. They realy are beatiful. But i'm not to crazy about the interior.

When i first saw pics of bangles new designs,ill have to admit,i wanted to grab my shotgun and find him at all costs.But i think bmw got so much critisizm just because they had such a drastic change.i mean peaple never saw a designs like bangles before.But after the 7 then z4 then 5 then 6 came out i can see what bangles designs were all about.I have no problems with bangle anymore.I actualy think his cars are beutiful.I saw the 5 for the first time at a deler in queens yesterday.I think its a realy great looking car.I have no problems with z4 or 7 anymore either.The 6 is absolutely beutiful 2.Its his best work yet.I cant wait to see what the M1 looks like.And also many more car companies came out with cars much ulier than there older designs But got no were near as much criticism.I could name about 20 cars that are pretty dissapointing.but this post is pretty long already.I think lexuses new disigns are no were near were they were before . also nissans and infinitis are geting kinda ugly.Also cadilac.TThe h1 i think was better looking than h2.And the honda element is the ugliest thing ive ever seen.

You can't be serious. I think you need a shrink. You're falling under the Bangle spell. " All they need to do is get used to it " he says, and you're getting used to it.
