There was an article on him in a magazine a couple years ago. I think it was Car and Driver. He has purchased some concept cars never built, had Ferarri built him a twin turbo F50 and a 550 Maranello station wagon. One of his sons likes yellow and had a garage full of yellow F40's.

sons, i thought it was his little brother prince jafray - the one who got in trouble for luring american beauty pagent winners to brunei and then kidnapping them as love slaves, i know he has a hell of a collection.

5,000 cars? If you drove a different one every day, it would take nearly 14 years to drive them all. But by then, someone like this would have added a couple thousand more?!? He has cars that are one-of-a-kinds, and will never be seen outside of his family, friends, and mechanics.

What a waste!!!

@Corey: You know my old english teacher had a Crocker, he had restored it him self adn he was proud of it. He always kept giving presentations about it to show us how a english presentation should be done.

If anybody deserves all those cars it's the king of Burnei. Even though the royal family is immensely rich they provide free health care and free education to all their subjects. After Monaco Burnei is concoderd to have one of the richst societies in the world. Too bad his brother and nephew ripped him off like that, just to show you some people don't have any morals.

And the FX, a Testarossa engine in a modern shell. I wonder how much power that thing has. I just can't start to imagine. Is it true that it's turbocharged?

I wonder if your English teacher still has that bike? Fully restored models that I have listed easily fetch $100,000 + US! Which is why I am searching for one to restore. It is impossible to get parts now, and when restoring you have to fabricate most of what is missing. But, it is worth it in the end. I think it would be a thrill to take the time to make each part an exact replica of the original. The key is to have a motor intact. If your teacher explained the bikes and their history properly, they have unfathomed power for something from that time. Their performance would rival most of today's 'superbikes', and this is a bike made some 60-65 years ago. I'll stop now...lol. Once I get started on them, it's hard for me to shut up.

As for the Sultan and his collection, I'm not sure I would say he is deserving of hording some of the most fantastic automobiles in the world simply because he is 'fortunate' enough to be sitting on one of the largest oil fields on the planet. It is great that he is giving to his country, and for that he should be commended. But, many of what he has, has significant historical value. And should be available for other enthusiasts to see. Not sheltered from the rest of the world by one eccentric man. If he were truly giving, he might consider using his non-active part of his garage as a museum for others to marvel at them. After all, I'm sure he isn't driving all of them this week.

Just this mans opinion.

@Corey: THis was when I was in college and that's almost 10 years ago now. The guy was an english / mechanics teacher so I guess he would have the skills and access to proper tools to make parts himself. I heard he let students make the parts for him or something. He loved bringing that bike along with him, he always parked it right infront of his window to make sure nothing happend to it. Needless to say he always got into arguments with janitors and stuff.

Anywayz yes if he would turn his unused garages into musea, well that would kinda be the mekka of every car lover.

seriously, sultan should open a museum with all his cars, get mad tourism to brunei. I know he offers free this and that, but so do lots of rich countries, then again, saudi princes live pretty exorbently too, so go figure. Sweden offers everyone free healthcare, but that is just socialism at work.

That Fx is a beast. I've read places claiming it to be like 400+hp, i've never heard of any sort of turbocharging, that Testarossa F12 was amazing, especially for being a SOHC layout. So how much money do i need to make before ferrari custom makes me cars?

Tell me about it. Then again, I don't know how many guys would be able to convince their families to take a vacation to Brunei just to see a car museum  .

I don't know about Ferraris', but Queen Elizabeth II was gifted ( like she needs another gift  ) with a Bentley State Limousine, a drastically one of a kind car built upon an Arnage platform to comemorate the Queen's 50 years on the throne. It came in at about 2 - $3,000,000 I think. Funky looking too. And a Continental T with a custom interior, and modified exterior cost about $600,000.

Special Commission cars ain't cheap.
