The cars:

WRX: 227hp 2.0L 16V DOHC Opposed-4 - Turbocharged and Intercooled - all wheel drive

MazdaSpeed: 210hp 2.0L 16V DOHC Inline-4 Turbocharged and Intercooled, Front wheel drive. Slalom speed of over 70mph. Has my vote.

Ford SVT Focus: 2.0L 16V DOHC Inline 4, 170hp, Front wheel drive.

Honda Civic Si: 2.0L 16V DOHC Inline 4, 160hp, Front wheel drive

GTI VR6: 2.8L 24V DOHC 15 degree V6, 200hp, front wheel drive

Dodge SRT-4: 2.4L 16V DOHC Inline 4, turbocharged and intercooled, 215hp. Front wheel drive.

Modified custom doesn't pass any emmissions anywhere and has reliability issues modified honda or acura is out on this. this one is for stock and strictly street legal cars.

if you dont know what your doing. there are lots of loopholes.

so true...
this one is for stock and strictly street legal cars.
now i feel like an idiot, your rules. if you could change the rims i would probably say the srt-4 but if by stock you mean bone stock the i would agree with the mazda simply since its handling is the tightest (from what i know).

c'mon, any fool can slap ZEX on their car and go fast, i'm talking a cool car out of the box, best for bolt-on maybe.

I'm pretty sure in sweden they'd get ya for trying to fool the emissions.

Fines there are based on income too.

The Subaru Impreza WRX wins hands down in this group, but are you sure that it's $25,000 or less?

If you're talking bang for the buck, I might have to go with the Dodge Neon SRT/4, yeah, thats right, a Neon. This car is relatively cheap and it really rocks! :P

Hallo thepolarfoxqx,

schau doch mal hier zum Thema Andere Automarken (Anzeige)? Eventuell gibt es dort etwas Passendes.

Der V16 Motor zum Selberbauen (Anzeige) ist auch genial.

bang for the buck maybe.

i think the wrx will still be running well at 150k (well, 100k if you drive like me), the dodge will be dieing at 80k (60 if you drive like me)

i don't think mercedes cares about the Neon. as of 2003, it's automatic is a hydraulically shifted 3speed. That is something out of the 70s. Build quality and engineering just aren't there on neon.

what they mean by hydraulically shifted is this transmission is before they electronically shifted transmissions. What they mean is that it is a "pellet shifted auto"

Who in gods name would do electrohydraulically actuated F1 paddle shifter

with 3 SPEEDS!!!!!

DODGE?

Anyway, the 3-speed has nothing to do with the SRT/4. And about the hydraulic transmission, whats wrong with good old fashioned machinery? No computers to mess up, it's cheaper, and probably pretty rugged.

rugged as in it's ability to positively shift is dependent upon pellets and the viscousity and quality of the fluid in it? There is a reason the world has moved onto electronic boxes. They are better. Old school is cheap. Cheap is the reason for using a 3 speed. Don't try to defent a 3 speed, c'mon, that is only one step above Slip'n slide power-glide (the original 2spd auto). People who would engineer neon like that would likely engineer the econo - super neon similarly right?

The people tweaking the SRT Dodges would have a big say in the matter I think, and they have different goals than the regular engineers. The regular guy's job is to cut corners and make stuff cheaper, where as SRT is there to make it Hot.

You have to admit that fixing a 3-speed would be fairly friendly on a budget minded Neon buyer's wallet. Keep in mind that most people who buy a base Neon probably don't care about too much about how slick and sporty their transmission is, they want safe, reliable transportation.

For the same price as you pay to have a neon, you could have a ford focus with a higher safety rating, a modern electronically shifted 4spd, a european tuned suspension, it is good reliable transportation just the same, but they spent the money to make it a good modern and exciting car you can really enjoy driving. A car is only as solid as you are willing to make it, and it is a lot easier caring for a car you really enjoy.

handles much worse, runs much much slower....

How many threads are you going to have where you bash the poor neon? It's a great car-- the best bang for the buck by far. (I thought the WRX was closer to $30,000?)

handles worse - uh - no.

try handles better, rides better, faster than a neon, has a real transmission, decent safety ratings, a quality interior, i can go on all day.

Focus is on the top 10 best selling cars in the US list.

Neon isn't.

Focus is on THREE car mag's top 10 cars list as the compact car segment leader, neon - nope.

c'mon. Neon just isn't as good of a car as a focus is. Neon might be better than the old escort, but focus is just a step above.

Well here the Focus gets no votes. Neon gets at least one, 7%.

Seriously, quit bashing the Neon. At the very least you should be cheering it on because Dodge is getting real with it's track performance.
