NO NEED TO WAIT FOR GENEVA: Here’s an early look at Lamborghini’s baby setting out on a recent test drive from the factory. The Italian sports car builder has announced its Ferrari 360 Modena-fighter, codenamed L140, will carry the name Gallardo (pronounced gayardo) after a famous fighting bull breed created in the 18th century by Francisco Gallardo.

Lambo’s mid-engined all-wheel-drive car will be powered by a 500-hp 5.0-liter V10 mated to a six-speed manual transmission with a traditional shifter or steering wheel shift paddles.

The car makes its official debut in Geneva on March 4 and goes on sale in May. Expect a sticker price in the $160,000 range.

Top-end Touareg?

Lamborghini is planning to launch a V10-powered version of the Volkswagen Touareg/Porsche Cayenne by 2006, according to a report in Germany’s Auto Bild magazine. Sant’ Agata’s high-end SUV is said to be based around a platform already under development at parent company Audi. Power for Lamborghini’s new mudslinger is rumored to come from a reworked version of the Gallardo engine.

oh man, i thought Laborghini got away from the offroad vehicle market. oh well, this new car looks slick and sounds like it will beat the 360. the price range here is actually cheaper than the 360, interesting. i'd like to see the official debut pictures because the car shown here is pretty unfinished from the outside.

they are factoring in dollar for dollar - that nothing is faster than an SVT Cobra - so more people can afford one - and it naturally is more interesting than something they could never have. I think value was the key component for the mustang there.
