CL 65 AMG: 1000 Newton metres of torque already available at 2000 rpm
Mercedes-AMG is the creator of yet another automotive masterpiece which celebrates its world premiere in Geneva. The new CL 65 AMG continues the success-ful twelve-cylinder tradition of Mercedes-AMG with an up-to-date V12 power unit which exhibits stunning performance characteristics. Thanks to twin turbocharging this engine develops 450 kW/612 hp and makes a remarkable 1000 Newton metres of torque available from 2000 rpm. This makes the CL 65 AMG the most powerful AMG model to date.
Thanks to this muscular AMG 12-cylinder powerpack the Coupé matches the performance of thoroughbred sports cars: from standstill the CL 65 AMG accelerates to 100 km/h in only 4.5 seconds (provisional figure). Its maximum speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h.
The new AMG engine is based on the 12-cylinder unit of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class. In addition to an increase in displacement from 5513 to 5980 cubic centimetres, numerous other modifications are responsible for the output and torque increase in the new CL 65 AMG. For example the AMG engineers have increased ther cylinder bore from 82 to 82.6 millimetres, lengthened the stroke of the crankshaft by six millimetres to 93 millimetres and increased the charge pressure of the turbochargers to a maximum of 1.5 bar. In addition they have used forged pistons, main and big-end bearings made from extremely high temperature and pressure-resistant materials and enlarged the apertures in the injection nozzles to achieve a higher fuel flow. Power is transferred by a five-speed automatic transmission with the SPEEDSHIFT function and steering-wheel gearshift. The exceptional torque of the V12 is always safely under control, thanks to modifications to various transmission components, the rear axle differential, the drive shafts and the wheel carriers.
Like all models in the CL-Class the new CL 65 AMG is fitted as standard with the Active Body Control (ABC) suspension system, whose spring struts have been configured for greater stiffness in the high-performance Coupé.

Rep Power: 7 | Here's a thread I found on the german forums.

Rep Power: 10 | that is a very heavy car, so the fact it can sprint to 62 in 4.5 is very impressive. I am dissapointed that the engine is simply a bored and tuned version of the one in CL600 (i would have liked to see a V12 AMG Kompressor) - but with that type of power - who cares.

Rep Power: 7 | What strikes me as a suprise is that Mercedes still doesn't have a 6 gear. A car like this deserves a 6 gear SMG don't you agree? |

Rep Power: 10 | the advanced electronic torque convertor and shifting system employed in the Mercedes Automatic Transmissions (these are actually built in house) is the most advanced - and fastest shifting automatic on earth. While not as fast as a SMG, it also doesn't have any of the bugs (like hard shifting at low speeds and rpms). BMW and Jaguar cars have already debuted with the new ZF automatic 6 speed, Audi, VW, and Merc will be quick behind. A 6 would be nice, but with that sorta torque, the awsome 5 box on there is definately sufficent.

Rep Power: 7 | I just got back from the Mercedes dealer, inquired about the CL55 and 65. First off the CL65 is full option. It being full option and having a bigger engine (thus needing special bearings and gears) justifies the high price (A full option CL55 costs around 150.000 euro), no official catalogue price was set yet but I was told it was going to be around 180.000 euro.
They're going to call me back for reserving one after talking to Mercedes about availibility.
I was also told that the CL65 isn't just capped at speed but also at torque. The actually torque of this engine would be 1200 Nm. What is it with these germans and theri caps anywayz?
I can imagine them capping torque for durability reasons, I mean not every part can handle 1200Nm torque, but why OH WHY do they have to cap their cars at 250km/h?! |

Rep Power: 7 | Q's I have several questions:
1- When is the Mercedes-Benz SLR going to come out (if at all)?
2- Is there going to be a Mercedes-Benz powered by a Hydrogen engine like the BMW 740H?
3- Will there be an SL65K or SL73K or something like that from Renntech?
4- Dos anyone know how to remove the Electronic Speed Limiters on new Mercedes-Benz or BMW cars (or any other cars with speed limiters)?
