a lot of those are theoretical and have never been tested, or not are not production cars.

True, although the Jaguar Xj220 is the fastest V6 production car, and at one time the fastest production car period, and the McLaren F1 is to this day widely regarded as close to the top. Most anything not production is really theoretical like Fox said.

If you want to open the field a bit more, you could say a top fuel dragster is the fastest.

yeah, for instance the tommahawk isn't a car, and no one has ever tested that 300mph, they think it can, but hey, who knows. They only made one aerotech and it was experimental, the fact the called it an oldsmobile is funny - because nothing about it is oldsmobile. Has anyone ever seen a veyron moving? I haven't. Koenigsegg has every reason to believe the CC can do 242, but has never been able to certify it in high speed trials, the automotive community considders McLaren the fastest, and calling that a production car is a liberal use of the word. The XJ220 is a huge car, originally it was supposed to have a V12, but that would have made the car bigger, so it made easily one of the most interesting vehicles around.

Calling a McLaren F1 a production car is a liberal use of the term, but since about 106 of all versions ( 69 standard F1s' including 5 prototypes ) were built it's good. Much more of a production car than most of the things on that list.

The Xj220 enjoys a peculiar obscurity.

i know, strange. I knew what one was since before it came out. I didn't find out what an aerotech was until last year.
