I was looking for some info on engine swaps and ended up reading the last eight pages of comments. Thought I would join and give my two cents.
I am a delivery driver for Domino's Pizza. I put my cars through the ringer driving about 1000 miles in 4 days each week. I normally deliver in a 2004 VW GTI but somedays that car needed repairs. THe 1998 3000GT VR-4 was my last project cars so on the GTI's off days it had to takes its place. I hvae put this car through the ringer almost working a complete month with this thing. The car does have alot of issues but most of them come from this car being a tech marvel when it came out.
There are some points that need to be addressed before we can trully see what kind of car the 3000 GT. First the car was made in 1990 and only had one generation. So this car was designed to go compete in a market with Mazda RX-7 FC, Toyota Supra TT Mk3, Nissan 300Z Z31, and the Nissan Skyline GT-R R32. All except GT-R R32 are the models that came before the ones that most people use as examples of betters cars. By 1995 most of these cars were a generation ahead of the 3000 GT and all Mitsu did to keep up was change it for a 5spd to a 6spd. It was a generation behind of what it normally gets compared to. When it came out it was golden but after almsot a decade it got dull. Second issue is that this car was a tech marvel. It had alot of gadgets that were cool in concept but lacking in practicality. The biggest isuse with new tech in cars is never the reliablity but rather the size. Things get to the size that they need to be after their third to fourth generations of products. The laptop is a great example of this. Now all those electric do-dads it has extra combine with the little motors they need to run things is where you have alot of extra weight.
Now is it the worst in its class? Yes if we only compare it to last gen Supras, RX-7s, and GT-Rs.
Can it compete? Well if you drown enough money into any car it can be competitive.
Is it a good platform? You can do alot to it and it is an underdog. If you want to have a reason be more arrogant when you win this is a way. |
